In one of the most incredible runs ever by an American high schooler, 18-year-old Hobbs Kessler ran a 3:34.36 1,500m at the Portland Track Festival tonight to obliterate the US high school record.

quote:

Kessler’s time is also faster than Jim Ryun‘s US U20 1,500 record of 3:36.1 which had stood since 1966.

quote:

Kessler, a senior at Community High School in Ann Arbor, Mich., was already a high school record holder after running 3:57.66 in February to take down the indoor mile record. Now he is, quite simply, one of the best milers in the United States, regardless of age. His time was the third-best by an American in 2021

It's gonna look like a comedy sketch when the US sends a high schooler, a college athlete and a pro to the Olympics in the 1500

My understanding is that he just started running last year. He's a competitive rock climber.

That's not entirely true. His parents were both competitive runners and he's been doing cross country events for a while. That said, he just started taking it seriously recently.

He started running his freshman year of HS, 4 years ago. But he is an elite climber too.

Breaking a legend's 55 year old record is damn impressive.

Hopefully he does at least a couple years of college running and doesn't make the mistake of turning pro now

It's also noteworthy that his time is faster than the collegiate 1500m record.

I wonder if he is considering going pro. The coach at NAU is great, but his record of athletes isn't really in the same league as Warhurst in Ann Arbor. It seems like what they are doing now is working really well, and it's difficult to imagine better mentors for a 15/5k guy than Sullivan and Willis.

I saw that a 17 year old broke 20.1 this weekend in the 200 meters.

Also Trayvon Brommel is finally healthy. Do you think he has a shot at the 100? It’s a relatively weak group for the Olympics with Gatlin pushing 40, Bolt retired, the rest of the Jamaicans falling off for obvious reasons, and Christian Coleman suspended.

I am pretty sure this is the kid I saw a lot 3-4 summers ago in Red River Gorge working really hard routes.

How do you just all of a sudden break your PR? Or maybe he has run several of these in his practices. Or he's athletically developing at a torrid pace.

Bromell is the favorite for the 100 now with the form he’s shown up to this point and coleman out.

Lyles has not been in top form so far this year in either the 100 or 200, but especially 100. He seems a good ways off from running 9.8

You get in a race with professionals where the sole purpose is the run fast enough to achieve the qualifying standard for the Olympics, or at least Olympic trials.

He ran a 3:57 mile indoors this winter and ran the 4th fastest ever HS 2 mile earlier this year in 8:39. So he didn't suddenly get fast. But he did crush his PR which has to do with training and tapering for a fast time and being in a race with pros where all he had to do was follow and had them to run with. In HS races he would have been way out front by himself.

There is that too. But last year he didn't race much because of the pandemic so we are seeing a big jump from his previous PRs from 2 years ago when he was a sophomore.

Yea it is a huge jump but there’s a lot more going into it.

The one that still baffles me is the foster kid that ran for southeastern. I’ve heard through the grapevine that may not entirely be on the up and up but still
