Jerry rice over Jim brown. When Jim brown played he was basically one of the biggest guy in the NFL. 230 lb rb were unheard of

Your post is hilariously terrible
Do you care to post facts about the games then vs. now?
I bet you don't.
The standard set by Spitz was incredible at that time.
Facts, not bullshite posts and emoticons. Post the difference btn the two and the eras if you dare.

Joe Louis was the greatest fighter who ever lived.

Babe Ruth
Jordan
Ali
Nicklaus
Lance Armstrong would have made it 10 years ago
I would like to see some coaches. Lombardi and Wooden would make good bookends.

I don't think it necessarily has to be the "best" player every to play a particular sport....maybe the most iconic or "definitive" and maybe even one whose fame transcended their own sport.
You also have to consider the relative position of the sport on the American landscape.
Babe Ruth and Michael Jordan are the obvious no brainers for meeting both criteria.
Ali - I don't know if it matters if he was the "best" boxer or not, but he is in the conversation and is far and away the most famous.
Boxing has been number 4 and maybe even higher at some point.
Simply put, I'd say that 50 years from now even non sports fans will know the names of Ruth, Ali and Jordan.
So who is the 4th -
If you look at football....Jerry Rice and Jim Brown are probably the best candidates. Even though his career was cut short, bo Jackson could be a sleeper here.
lebron might be when his career is over, but not yet.
Baseball? Maybe hank Aaron. And while there are others in the conversation as greatest baseball player who else has the wide appeal.
Michael Phelps? Yes he is a great swimmer but that is a sport that is only relevant once every four years, and his medal numbers are inflated by having so many races.
Carl Lewis has the medals, but how many 20 something general sports fans know who he is today? I'd take Jesse Owens for historical significants, and Jim Thorpe for someone who was the greatest athlete of his time.
Ha, I'm writing too long. I could make a great case for tiger woods, but I think that it has to go to Jackie Robinson, not just for his on field accomplishment but for the historical significance.

No love for Jackie Robinson?
Also, the list is a joke without Jesse Owens.

If we are talking American sports I think Deion deserves a mention. Rock star in two sports that are considered America's game.

Ali, Jordan, Ruth are not really debatable. 4th is tough.
Tiger and Jackie Robinson would probably be the two I would choose between and it would probably be Jackie.

If it has anything to do with being "American", then Ali shouldn't be in the conversation.
frick him.
Joe Louis was a great boxer, a better man, and a better American.

I'd find a space for Jesse Owens.

Two white guys, two black guys. White guys must be long dead. Black guys must be living and must start with Jordan. Mount Sportsmore must fit this criteria.
The significance of Mount Sportsmore is that the great whites represent America's racist past, while the great blacks represent America's future - hope.
It will be a beautiful monument.
