All professional leagues should have a hard salary cap. No going above allowed at all

It would produce a better product for the viewers and bring back more competition. It would make running/owning a team more a chess match instead of saying just back up the Brinks truck and buy all the players. Most professional sports are having issues with this and it is only going to get worse if middle east money gets involved in American sports. Look at what they have done to European soccer teams. Most of the teams aren't even that profitable anymore.

These leagues will continue to suck until they have new leadership. No rule or cap can fix what’s happening.

NBA should have a hard cap and get rid of max contracts, but neither will ever happen.

Sports and economics are two different things. We should want the playing field in a sports league leveled to the maximum extent possible in order to give all teams an equal chance to compete on the field. That makes for more interesting games and seasons, which is what fans want. How they compete in the marketplace is a totally separate question.

How do you suggest that be accomplished?
Professional sports leagues such as the NBA, NFL, MLB, are, in essence, illegal monopolies. The way they exist despite anti-trust laws is through collective bargaining. Thus, unless the players/owners can agree on a salary cap it is not happening. Particularly in MLB. The NFL agreed to one. The NBA kind of has one. MLB, thus far, isn't budging

It never stops amazing me how this website can be so vehemently pro-capitalism except when it comes to sports.
They can see the harm that unfettered growth and chasing the dollar does there, but they can't connect the dots to the world outside of sports.
Truly fascinating behavior.

Would you like a salary cap at your job? Would you like your boss to make more money while not sharing any of it with you? There is competition. The competition is between the owners forking out more of their own money to athletes with the goal of winning. If they are too cheap to do that then their teams deserve to suck.

What’s your point? Do you think America should be communist/socialist?

The whole point of having a competitive league is that the competition starts off on a level playing field and is fair. It’s about the performance of the players on the field, stats and scores, not how much money some rich Saudi prince can pour into salaries.
Real life is about individuals making their own choices to improve their lot in life….in other words, it’s reality.
I’m amazed you can’t see the differences.

There is revenue sharing in professional sports

Most major sports franchises are valued around $1 billion and they aren’t making money?

Or we get rid of salary caps and collecetively bargained salaries and let the free market decide

Salary caps are generally dumb; however, most leagues put a soft one in knowing that fans of 80% of the teams would quickly check out every year without it.

To be fair, I'd venture 90%+ of the population doesn't truly think in depth about their beliefs. For most things, the private market truly is better than the public market; however, the gray areas tend to get pumped in with the rest.
Also, I would argue that collective bargaining is part of the private market, as players and owners both come together and create contracts, understanding that the fan is ultimately the consumer. If the fan goes away due to non-competitiveness, the dollars go away as well. The Draft is probably the closest to socialism item in sports, and current players are bargaining for future players with a vested interest in keeping their salaries even more artificially low.
