The dude is 37 and has had nagging injuries the second half of his career. What do you expect out of players at that age? He's got over 600 HR and another season away from reaching 3k hits.

It's not uncanny at all for a player to decline in his (alleged) mid-to-late 30s. A player who rose to prominence 16 years ago and was awesome 8 years ago isn't awesome anymore? No shite.
The contract, however, is totally
worthy

Between signing Pujols, Hamilton, and doosh Wilson not sure wtf the Angels were thinking

Yep. This is one of those examples of how it's not wise to try and strictly buy a championship. It's a crap shoot, and if you make the wrong moves, it haunts you much longer than trying to build mostly from within your system.

I, for one, don't believe he is that young. I'm not sure why anyone else believes he is.

Best decision ever made by a team in sports was the cardinals letting him walk.

If the Angles simply moved him to a corner OF slot, his WAR would increase to about -0.8. Still bad, but at least not so horrific. It also shows how usage dependent WAR is, much like RBI.

If only he could play against the Astros every game he'd probably be underpaid.

I think his WAR would be even lower playing corner OF. He would get a positive positional adjustment, but his defensive metrics would likely be so terrible in the OF it would cancel that out and probably even take his WAR further down. For example, WAR penalized Mark Trumbo more for playing horrendous corner OF than David Ortiz for DH-ing last year.

I believe he also has a 10 year personal service contract with the Angels. He ain't coming back until he is 55.

Yeah not sure where this "they let him walk" came from the Cardinals from all reports came in with a 20m a year offer. The Angels just came in with GOD money and he took it

"It's not rocky sci (rocket science)" he once said when explaining his contract dilemma a few years ago.

you are aware that he's 37 right? You are making it sound like he was some bum player. He was already a hall of famer by 30.

They still offered $200M for him. But there's always a sucker team, and the Angels were it. So they were lucky the Angels outbid them.

I mean, there's other guys out there that are his age or older and, statistically, he's worse than all of them.

I would say defense kills him but this year a -1.8 offensive WAR and -1.2 Defensive WAR according to baseball reference
Well, he's only played 6 games in the field this season. Having a -1.2 dWAR in 6 games is really really impressive.

Funny enough, he hit two bombs last night.
Todd Zeile was my first favorite Cardinal and will always be my sentimental #1, but I'm so glad I got to watch the entirety of Pujols' career and it was a blast. Got to witness him hitting two homers at Turner during his rookie year. A beast even then. Of course I wish he could have finished his career here, but I'm glad that deal never went through. It was clear he was on the downslope of his career before he left and that contract was basically rewarding him for his past achievements and not for what he was going to produce the rest of his career.
