Last year he was caught stealing 11 times on 40 attempts.

This year he has been caught stealing 13 times on 83 attempts.

Hmmmmm, wonder what changed.

Even dumber imo, why make a rule for the entire season but not the playoffs? How many games were decided in the regular season based on the stupid extra inning base runner on second?

Pretty hard to argue its not easier to steal bases in 2023 than it was in 2022 or any year before that

Last year he was coming off major knee surgery and only played part of the season. You can't use that as a comparison.

2019 is more fair - 37 SBs on 46 attempts, but even then he was 20 years old and still learning the finer points of the game.

He's an elite baserunner and those guys always put up solid stats, regardless of the rules. It's the middle of the pack guys with decent but not exceptional speed, who are inflating the SB numbers - guys who might sneak in 3 or 4 a year are now getting 10, etc.

looks like he had about a 75% success rate last year and still would have stolen ~60 bases this year with that rate of success

Maybe the fact that last year he was less than a year removed from ACL surgery???

It amazes me that people bitch and moan about this.

He set a new bar for everyone. Is he apples to apples 30 bases better than the other 40/40 club members? No one is saying that. There are tweaks to the rules and he obviously is on par with the past greats and arguably a
lot better.

Once again, the throw over rule could bait runners into thinking they have an upper hand. A 3rd throw over, which is allowed, would pick off a hell of a lot more people than in the past. Its a chess match that I like. It is not a huge advantage if you have a smart pitcher.

Then why doesn’t that same impact happen across the board. For say Randy Arozerena?

Ronald Acuña also leads the league in grown men he's made cry online this season, too.

For extra perspective, MLB X is celebrating Lindor having his first 30/30 season. The 4th Met to ever do that. With the same rules RAJ has.

the pitcher can still throw over a 3rd time, he just needs to get the runner out or he takes 2nd.

Oh is that all he has to do to not give the runner a free base? Because pickoffs are so easy, I'm sure every manager is telling his pitchers to use all 3 attempts with a league success rate at 5%.

This makes it a chess match of a runner being more agressive

Yeah, thankfully that's happening and runners are getting greedy trying to exploit the rule as pickoffs are up 25% from the previous couple years of the "dead stealing era."

Will be interesting to see if it decreases after this test year as runners realize its not so easy to take advantage of the new rule and they're more cautious going forward.

I am not sure if you are being cheeky but having actual knowledge who is on first base and their stealing tendancies should certainly change the throw over strategy.

If Acuna is on 1st, I am sure as hell using all my throw overs and then inclined to throw a 3rd time if there are signs that he is taking advantage.

Cool story.

I wouldn't really know because my team had such a dominant season that we don't really have to concern ourselves with individual outcomes like that.

Prime Rickey Henderson would’ve had 300 steals in a season

I'm sure being a full year removed from ACL surgery has absolutely no bearing on his increased stolen base rate.
