I was looking at Joe Burrow's crazy stats for this year and this led me down a rabbit hole to see how he stacks up against other great college seasons. Man, college football statistics are insane. Some numbers that jumped off the page:

Most passing attempts in a single game: 89 (Connor Halliday, Washington State - October 19, 2013)

Most passing yards in a single game
: 734 (shared by Patrick Mahomes, Texas Tech - October 22, 2016 and Connor Halliday, Washington State - October 4, 2014)

Most passing yards in a season: 5,833 (B.J. Symons, Texas Tech - 2003) [This is averaging almost 500 yards a game over a 12 game season.]

Most passing touchdowns in a single game: 11 (David Klingler, Houston - November 17, 1990)

Most passing interceptions in a single game: 9 (John Reaves, Florida - November 1, 1969)

Two comments on this one:

1) How do you not get benched after, say, your 6th interception?
2) Fun trivia fact- John Reaves is the father of Layla Kiffin. Mrs. Freshwater has moved on from Lane, but she's still a dime.

Most rushing yards in a season: 2,628 (Barry Sanders, Oklahoma State - 1988)

Most rushing touchdowns in a season: 37 (Barry Sanders, Oklahoma State - 1988)

Most rushing attempts in a single game: 58 (Tony Sands, Kansas - November 23, 1991)

Most rushing touchdowns in a single game: 8 (Howard Griffith, Illinois - September 22, 1990)

Most receptions in a single game: 23 (Tyler Jones, Eastern Michigan - November 28, 2008 and Randy Gatewood, UNLV - September 17, 1994)

Most receiving yards in a single game: 405 (Troy Edwards, Louisiana Tech - August 29, 1998)

Most receiving touchdowns in a season
: 27 (Troy Edwards, Louisiana Tech - 1998)

Most receiving touchdowns in a single game: 7 (Rashaun Woods, Oklahoma State - September 20, 2003)

Most extra point attempts in a single game: 14 (Terry Leiweke, Houston - November 23, 1968)

Longest FG made in college football history: 69 yards (Ove Johansson, Abilene Christian University - 1976)
Note: this 69 yard kick was made with a kicking tee and wider goal posts. The longest FG without a tee and current goal post distance is Martin Gramatica, Kansas State in 1998)

Fewest points allowed by a team in a season: 7 (Duke University 1938 and Villanova University in 1937)

Most points allowed by a team in a season: 605 (UConn - 2018)

I think he broke Drew Brees' record of 83 in a 1998 game vs. Wisconsin

ETA: It was 98 not 99

I actually knew this one for some reason.

In the era of SportsCenter repeats airing all night, it must've gotten seared into my brain that weekend.

I really miss the NCAA games because I would always start three dynasties - one to break all of the passing marks, one to break all of the rushing records, and then one not play like a stat chasing a-hole lol.

Tech had some good teams back then. They beat Alabama in back to back games in 97 and 99, Alabama winning the SEC Title in 1999. Surprisingly, they were coached by the infamous Gary Crowton from 96-98

This one is the most amazing. To end up tied at such a high number

Leach's offense at its peak, IMO. TT played some wild games that year. That shootout vs Oklahoma State was insane.

Jarrett Lee tried to break this record.

I saw Klingler light up La Tech in the astrodome. Was a pretty great offense against bad defenses.

I thought either Bama or Tenn fans on occasion have bragged about having a season giving up 0 points in a season.

That was vs a very good Nebraska team as well. I want to say they were defending National Champions.

ETA: They appear to have split title with Michigan year before.

Did you factor in a bowl game?

Tennessee did in 1939 in the regular season. They lost 14-0 in their bowl game

People will come to realize that Gary Crowton wasn't near as bad as Les Miles made him
