The AAF having NFL support probably helps them be more viable than the XFL. The NFL is still capable of crushing opposition or supporting a minor league.
If the NFL wants the AAF as a football G League, the AAF will be ok.

Attendance of 20K a game at a minor league football game in the spring is pretty damn good, but they are playing in 70K stadiums. Of course it's going to look "empty".
San Antonio and maybe Orlando are the only teams that look like they having anywhere close to 20K in attendance.
The attendance at Birmingham Iron games feels like high school spring jamboree at Davis Wade Stadium.

They have to have a smart model and it will easily work. Hell the USFL was doing fine until they decided to actually compete with the NFL.
Sooooo...
Go to markets without an NFL team that have a penchant for supporting football to start with:
Birmingham
San Antonio
Orlando
Memphis
Salt Lake City
Etc. Are all good calls.
San Diego...meh
Arizona and Atlanta...nope.
I would look to add the following:
OKC
Austin
Charleston
Just my .02.

The NFL support will be as much of a detriment as an asset. With NFL support comes NFL meddling. Fans of the new league have been positive about the lack of flags for hitting the QB and violent hits in general. The NFL isn't going to want the Junior league it supports with it's money playing by a different set of rules and making it look bad.
Be prepared for a press release stating that they are "looking at making the games safer" soon.

To me, that's the only model where Spring football will work.
Keep the seasons short. 10 weeks is perfect
Have the marginal NFL players work to improve their skills
Keep the geography rule. I love the regional relevence it provides by adding instantly recognizable names to the local teams.

AAF games on NFLN recently beat out MLS games on ESPN...

AAF games to date have posted pretty consistently good ratings, so this makes some sense. Week 1’s CBS games obviously drew the highest numbers so far, pulling in 2.9 million viewers on average, but the numbers have been reasonably strong even after the novelty of the first game and the move away from broadcast television. Week 2 saw a million viewers for TNT’s game and 424,000 and 425,000 for the games on the lower-distribution NFL Network, and Week 3 saw a further rise for NFL Network, with its games going to 491,000 and 525,000 even amidst stories questioning the AAF’s finances. The NFLN numbers fell a bit this week to 409,000 and 450,000 viewers, but those numbers are still very good for less prominent sports programming in February. (Numbers for AAF games on CBSSN and B/R Live are not available.) Let’s look at some sports programming this week that posted lower numbers than that Sunday NFLN AAF game (data via ShowBuzz Daily, presented alphabetically):
Basketball: Memphis-Oklahoma City on NBA TV Sunday night (338,000), Iowa State-Texas on ESPN2 Saturday afternoon (366,000) and Mississippi State-South Carolina (women’s) on Sunday afternoon (310,000).
Bowling: PBA Arkansas Open on FS1 Sunday night (369,000).
Football: The NFL Scouting Combine on NFLN Saturday morning (363,000).
Golf: Honda Classic coverage on Golf Channel Thursday afternoon (two slots) and early Friday afternoon: (355, 358 and 434,000 viewers).
Hockey: Tampa Bay-New York on NBCSN Wednesday night (379,000).
Soccer: DC United-Atlanta United and LAFC – Sporting Kansas City on ESPN Sunday night (394,000 and 361,000), Chelsea-Fulham on NBCSN Sunday morning (447,000), Newcastle-West Ham on NBCSN Saturday afternoon (419,000) and Arsenal-Tottenham on NBCSN early Saturday morning (417,000).
Of course, that doesn’t mean that the AAF is stronger programming than all of those sports; everything listed above except bowling and football had other broadcasts this week that beat the AAF. But when AAF games on NFLN are outperforming some NHL, EPL and MLS content on higher-distribution channels like NBCSN and ESPN, that’s not bad, and it certainly suggests there’s value here for broadcasters. And that’s why TNT’s picking up some more games.

And this is with ESPN ignoring the league too. MEAC women’s basketball gets more coverage than the AAF on ESPN.

I’m not seeing much advertising going on for the AAF. I was originally excited for it but I forget it’s happening most of the time. Their marketing it poorly. You also can’t bet on it on a lot of sites and it doesn’t show up on my yahoo sports app for box scores.

I'm gonna be honest, AAF is a nice little side show until football season kicks back off but I'll follow the league NOT affiliated with the NFL next year.

After college and NFL seasons are over I need a break from football. I can't be bothered to watch those 5th tier players and teams play. There is no connection for me.
