do either or both look to sign high school players and convince them not to play college sports and instead start their professional careers and get paid for playing?

The AAF is following NFL eligibility rules.

The XFL is discussing the matter. So the XFL might have more lax eligibility rules.

Merger in 3 years and contract a few teams and this could be a successful off season model.

I love the new league. However, I don't see it lasting more than 5 unless the NFL steps in and supplements.

No reason the AAF can't survive and grow. More interest and viewership than the WNBA, and that league has been around a while now.

I'll continue to watch it. Has a chance to be a legit, spring football league.

The WNBA example is terrible comparison. The ONLY reason it exists is because the NBA subsidizes the shite out of it.

Don't talk about the AAF like this.

Exactly. A little juice from the NFL and the AAF would be fine. Wouldn't require near the investment the NBA has put into the WNBA.

Why would they take a pay cut?

The AAF just needs better placement of its product on tv. It should be on CBS, TNT/TBS, and NFL Network and that’s it.

The WNBA probably costs a shite ton less overall than minor league football.

I hope it lasts, but I don’t see it making it. Look in the stands, they’ve been empty.

People don't want to watch football all year long. Or not enough, to be exact.

If the WNBA is the bar for the AAF, they are screwed. The WNBA is by far one of the worst pro sports leagues to compare to.

I don’t see why the NFL can’t have a minor league. The NBA G-League is a true minor league now.

Attendance of 20K a game at a minor league football game in the spring is pretty damn good, but they are playing in 70K stadiums. Of course it's going to look "empty".

As for the OP, I don't see a lot of the XFL etc trying to sign kids out of high school. What you may see is kids go to college for a year, want to leave, and instead of transferring down to FCS or junior college, they go to a minor league.
