Multiple people in the thread espousing those exact thoughts. It's why high school sports are going to shite. Committing to a team, especially at the high school level is about putting something above self, but so many in this generation refuse to do that, but still want to be a part of a team. Why am I not playing, why am I not playing the position I want, I have to miss for this, I have to miss for that, blah, blah, selfish, nothing is more important than me and what I want right now.

Baw, you care a little bit too much about high school sports

Article says semis Friday, finals Saturday. Prom Saturday.

where's the school and where's the championships being played?

I imagine the team has to check into a hotel on Thursday (if not even Wednesday for a Thursday practice at the championship site) and won't leave until their run is finished

just as an aside... it takes 7 hours to drive from Buffalo to NYC

Why is prom the same time as a softball game?

Also for all the other people, maybe they made a commitment for prom too.

Well, when you've coached it for 15 years, it's insanely easy to see the changes. Those changes are even more clear to the older coaches we learned from.

It's unfortunate that the most important lessons are being sucked out of the game simply due to selfishness.

Shenendehowa's senior prom is also scheduled for Saturday, just hours after the championship game.
So why can't they do both?

A viewer alleged to WRGB that the Shenendehowa seniors were asked to choose between Saturday's championships and prom. The viewer claims that the seniors were then cut from the team altogether.
Zero issue with this. If they somehow did wint the title, I don't think it would be correct for those who decided not to play to get their "rings" or whatever honors are given for winning a title when they essentially quit the team.

So why can't they do both?

depending on the location of the 2 events... it could be up to a 7-hour drive to get from 1 to the other

assuming the championship game is mid-afternoon and the prom is all the way on the other side of the state... prom would be long over by the time they get back to campus from the game

My nephew was a starting RB last year and missed a district game because he was at the national FFA Convention. It happens a lot at small schools where kids are involved in multiple activities.

The deal with prom seems like a bridge too far though.

I would have missed the playoffs one year in football if it had gone into Thanksgiving break because of a previously scheduled trip but the coach knew about the latter before the season started.

That wouldn’t fly where I went to school. But I would’ve never brought that up to a coach either because I’d rather play than do anything.

All that a lot of these response showcase is the sad reality that HS Sports is the pinnacle of some people's lives.

I would be questioning who set the date for the prom, I'm sure the run to stage semis isn't a massive surprise so surely sporting calendars etc. would/should have been looked at prior to booking.

In some ways the school has some fault here scheduling prom when they did, knowing it could cause a conflict for their students

Like why not schedule prom a week later if high school spring sports' championship weekend is this weekend?

Prom dates are set my teachers/ admin that don’t care about sports and Prom is the biggest thing of the year (to the people that set the date.) it is more about the venue they want schedule, not the school athletic calendar.

At least in the South prom is on a Saturday night usually and baseball coaches know that you play varsity before lunch if one of the teams has prom and JV after if you even want to.

It does go to show that HS sports and putting your all into something to see how far you and your teammates can go isn’t really a thing anymore. It is no different than chess club to a lot of people now. Just something you do. Same as band, beta club, chess club. Travel/club sports have killed HS athletics. (Or will very soon).

If you were a key contributor, I imagine there's a good chance you would have looked back on that and wished you had played the game over the trip(obviously depending on what the trip was, my response is assuming it's a standard family vacation or something)

It looks like the championship games are on Long Island, and the school is up north of Albany. So roughly a 5 hour trip.

Gotcha, yea that makes sense.

The prom part sucks anyway, just get home for the after parties, and you're good to go.

This is based on your view that the older generations were correct. Thats not always the case. The older generations also werent tied to playing year round.
