He was on the verge of being the next generation's Dale Earnhardt. He was so close to the championship in 1992. He won the Daytona 500 that year. He won the first all star race under the lights in Charlotte. He missed 2 races after a bad crash in Pocono. He returned to his first full race at Michigan where his brother Clifford died the same weekend from a crash during practice for the Busch race. He was leading the points in the final race of the season until Ernie Irvin wrecked him.

Davey's eyes after the Pocono wreck. Video

One of the best paint schemes of all time.

quote:

On July 12, 1993, fresh off a third place finish at New Hampshire the day before, Davey Allison boarded his new helicopter with family friend, Red Farmer. The two left Hueytown, Alabama, home to the "Alabama Gang," for a day at the Talladega Superspeedway to watch friends David and Neil Bonnet test a car for David's Busch Series debut.

When Allison arrived at the track, he was attempting to land the helicopter in a fenced in area on the track's infield. Just about a foot from the ground, the helicopter suddenly spun out of control and crashed. Red Farmer suffered minor injuries while Allison suffered serious head injuries from the crash and died the next day.

Davey would be 62 years old today.

Davey's wife and kids.

What caused the helicopter to suddenly spin out of control a foot off the ground?

Such a sad time. NASCAR had also just lost Alan Kulwiki in a plane crash a few months earlier.

I remember reading that right after the Pocono crash, while the cars were under caution, Mark Martin keyed his radio and told his crew, "They better just go get a body bag for Davey."

Then Neil Bonnett (who was the one to pull Red and Davey from the wrecked helo) was killed at Daytona the following February. At his funeral, the preacher said (paraphrasing) last summer, Davey Allison was coming to see David and Neil. Now, Neil has gone to see Davey.

One of the funnier things was after Davey died, his widow Liz started dating country singer Joe Diffie (much to the dismay of the folks in Hueytown). Someone made a sign that read "Welcome to Hueytown, home of Joe Diffie; built by Davey Allison."

Davey was going to win the championship that year he died. That 28 car was hell on wheels and Davey was maturing into a solid driver.

two categories of death in the thread.

1. entertainer traveling.
two in thread.
helicopter and a plane.
back many decades when I was interested in racing entertainers (singers) mostly died in car wrecks.
death by air took buddy holly and big bopper and Richie valens. I cried.

2. racing cars.
wife and I owned a car she wanted to road race. around that time then-pope declared after a formula 1 type car driver died racing that hence forth no race car drivers get buried in church consecrated ground because its suicide to race a car.

RIP.

He would of won multiple championships.

Even Dale, Sr. acknowledged that had him and Tim Richmond lived that he wouldn't of won 7 titles.

My love for NASCAR died with Davey Allison. He was my all time favorite driver. I followed the TEXACO Havoline car for a while after his death, but it was never the same.

One of the absolute best brands in NASCAR history...the 90s was peak NASCAR!!

Our crew worked on the wall by the 'Daytona' immediately after that death. Walking that banked turn was crazy.

Sad time in NASCAR.

I worked for Texaco at the time of his death. He was a very nice and humble human. His replacement Erie Ervan not so much.

Freaking Joe Diffie.

Well, you found a way to post a bunch of nonsensical word salad somewhere other than the poli board I see.
You are an insufferable douche wherever you are apparently.
Dafuk were you even trying to say?

Same. I grew up in Hueytown with the Allisons and their cousins. Just lost all interest after Davey died.

I remember when this happened. There was talk that had he braced for impact he probably would have survived. Unfortunately it is believed he fought the controls all the way into the ground and that sealed his fate. I will say though this is the first I’ve ever heard of him being only a foot or two off the ground before the accident

great driver, but it's a huge stretch to claim that he was going to be the "next generation's Dale Earnhardt".

he was well into his thirties and had never won a single championship. his best final standings finish was third.... if he had been 22 when he died then sure, but he was 32 and had nine seasons under his belt.
