Yeah, the Jackson thing is really fascinating. And why would Johnson make up that he was sabotaged? He already admitted to using steroids, just not the one he tested positive for... I'm glad I watched it - sports mystery I had no idea about.

I will say I had no idea Lewis was so involved with this conspiracy. I was 8 when '88 happened, and I just knew Johnson was DQ'ed.

I thought it was a good episode. Just a great series 30 for 30 is.

What I found crazy was that the US Trials positive in '88 wasn't reported till '03. How does that happen?

It would seem so. I wish at the end, the guy would have said who tested positive before he threw them out.

my neighbor ran in the calgary olympics I believe in the 800 that year and he and his wife stayed in teh olympic village hotel in Calgary and they said the scene that night in the hotel when the buzz went around that johnson tested positive was raucous to say the least. he has some very cool pics.

I think they said what CL tested + for was no longer on the banned list. What's the director's story. I didn't recognize the name of the dude who did "Broke" but when I read on here it was the Cocaine Cowboys guy, it made sense. What was the angle for the director of this one?

Just Lewis and Smith seemed gay to me. Plus that track coach who might have been a post-op tranny.

They said what he was positive for would not be considered a positive now.

ETA: But this was never reported till '03. Supa was right on his answer to this. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Cool. I missed the specifics on that.

Weird how the East German ladies grew mustaches like men from the drugs, but the western hemisphere dudes got all effeminate from the drugs.

I think they had to take estrogen as part of the poo poo plater. This would explain it.

For the same reason that the UCI made Lance Armstrong's positive at the Tour of Switzerland go away. They don't want to take down their moneymaker

Oh I thought so too. It was weird hearing that many "legends" talk like that. Except for Lewis, I'd never heard any of them really talk.

Ran the 800 what? Snow race? Bobsled push? 1988 Calgary olympics were the Winter Olympics, and were held before the '88 Seoul Summer games. Either Johnson tested positive for the race in February of '88, or you're friend has his story mixed up

this was a fantastic episode. some thoughts from memory

* Everyone knew the majority of these guys were doing something at the time
* Johnson was portrayed at the time as a steroid raging evil kill everyone monster....interesting that was not the case at all
* No one has ever liked Carl Lewis- Ever

really great episode, I was glued to the set

Yeah, it really was a good one. And then there was the climactic part towards the end - I had to rewind it as I was thinking, "Whoa whoa whoa, so there really could have been consipracy/sabotage!?"

Lulz at the announcers at the time fawning all over Carl Lewis for how classy he was for congratulating Ben Johnson after one of those pre-'88 races, when he was really trolling and called him a false starting mother fricker.

Lewis tested positive three times before the 1988 Olympics for pseudoephedrine, ephedrine, and phenylpropanolamine.
