I think you're misintepreting the frustration of people watching these games - most of it is on the coaches instead of the players.
The players giving all out effort is awesome to watch - the coaching (or lack thereof...) I think is what people are complaining about.

Refs call tricky tackle offensive fouls all game.
Defense can mug the ball handler, or have a moving block, but no call.
