He had buyer’s remorse about halfway to the mound.

And I still don't understand his approach. Did he not have a father growing up who taught him how to fight?

You could tell how strong a baw Ryan was. Just basically stops his momentum and holds him there.

What's the more legendary pic?

Nolan Ryan throwing punches with Ventura in a headlock or Nolan Ryan on the mound with a bloody lip? (they are 2 different occasions)

I guess thats it. Otherwise Ventura just ran straight into a headlock. You commit to that attack, you better go full tilt and get the guy to the ground.

And Ryan!!!? He did not watch Bull Durham. Use the pitching hand to crack a guys bony assed skull six times.

Not sure why Robin thought ducking his head was a good idea. I guess he thought he was just gonna spear him like Goldberg but didn't realize Nolan Ryan was country strong

no but he was one of the few pitchers that took strength training seriously or did it at all. Pretty when on the Angels he was the only one who lifted and he had to sneak off or buy his own equipment to do it. When he got traded to the Astros, he got the whole team to pretty much buy and start lifting and then also running the famous "hill" that was built into the new weight room he helped design in 81.

nolan wasnt "country strong" nor was he juicing, he simply was a semi-modern pitcher playing in a different era. He used many of the techniques that are common today, the techniques him and house developed. Although his strength training wasnt perfect by modern standards, it was light years ahead of everyone else. Also his conditioning was essentially a modern version when other pitchers beleived you needed to be a cross country star to be a pitcher and believed in "lactic acid flush runs"

there is a reason nolan has so many strikeouts, he was essentially a modern day pitcher with elite velocity and off speed, just in the 70s and 80s. His average velo compared to the avg of the rest of the league is the largest in modern times.

Yeah, you can't be half committed.

It's like he ran into that headlock.

Dude won 70+ games in his 40s and was still throwing flames when nobody was doing that. That was more than country strong. I'm not dogging the guy, just being realistic.

I personally saw the dude pitch up close three times in his 40s in my younger years. The first baseball game AT ANY LEVEL that I ever saw was his 299th win. I studied his career like nerd librarian women break down Shakespeare sonnets.

Nolan was clean, baw. God given.

Nolan Ryan is trash. Ventura should have been prepared and given Nolan the long overdue arse whipping he deserved.

ETA: He is overrated as a player. He is underrated as a manager.
