They have a team in the varsity league this year, but did not crack the top 8.

STM was one of the top programs in the early 2000s. What’s up with their drop off?

We have to be close to having some legacy players by this point.

Bear, do you know when and why they changed the designation from CSAL?

The change came in 2016, when the new commissioner took over and transitioned the league from CSAL and CYO to CSAA Varsity and JV.

Totally understandable. This is one of those deals where if you got to experience it then it’s part of you it and if you didn’t then it just seems stupid

I never experienced it. I don’t know what it is. Is this a real attempt at rankings of 8th grade basketball teams in a certain area? If so, that’s pretty funny.

Do a lot of these kids end up at Catholic?

I would have thought that CHS would dominate these other schools

These teams and the games they share become legend over the years. Most of the kids end up at the same high school where intense rivalries eventually fade into the playful boasts and funny stories told amongst friends for decades to come. But bragging rights at a reunion, crawfish boil, or tailgate party years in the future don’t come without these well fought games. This thread captures all of it, and is followed closely each year. By the time the Catholic High tournament rolls around in late February, it will seem like advanced rounds in March Madness. Hats off to the OP who does this every year.

Absolute chaos on Day 1 of the Dunham Tournament as the top three ranked teams all went down. I honestly can’t remember this ever happening—especially not on opening day of the season:

Parkview defeated #1 SGS, 19–17

U-High defeated #2 CHS, 22–21

#6 St. Jude defeated #3 St. Aloysius, 19–16

Nobody had a #1 SGS vs. #2 CHS win-or-go-home game pegged this early in the Dunham Tourney, but that’s exactly what we get tonight. Buckle up.

Those are low scoring games, too. Sounds like they were early season slug fests when the kids are still getting things sorted out. Nothing like spending a weekend at a tournament during the holidays.

Early season + 2 quarters of running clock and 20 min games vs. 24 min games.
