I didn’t like it when it was first announce but it’s been nice

I’ve never had F1TV before and that’s a bonus. The shy sports broadcast is what I watch for the race

Product is good, especially being able to only use the SkySports feed, but I'm not paying for another subscription.. It is what it is and I'll just keep up via news outlets and this thread.

As said numerous times, I think F1 is cutting off their nose to spite their face. Yes, going to get the core F1 fans, but all the casual fans that have jumped on since the DTS era are going to dwindle out when races aren't on broadcast stations or ESPN, which every tv package carries.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but the only races that were ever televised at normal times on ESPN were the ones in the western hemisphere, excluding Las Vegas. So they’re not missing out on the casual sports bar crowd by not being on a TV package.
And what if this younger DTS fan doesn’t have a TV package or doesn’t want to carry something with ESPN(one of the costliest parts of any package) and they either already subscribed to AppleTV or can easily subscribe to it to keep watching?

Miami, Austin, Canada, Mexico, and Monaco were all broadcast on ABC, everything else was ESPN/ESPN2/ESPN News

Again, we will never know what it does to viewership since Apple doesn't release figures and when they do, they are cherry picked like their MLS broadcasting. The apple execs claim in Miami that ratings are "way up" over 2025 is suspect and not backed up by any data, especially when they were WAY down everywhere outside of Italy.

I know it. I’m with you. I should have said prime time.
It sucks that these races aren’t free to watch this year like they were in the past.

And I’m with you about Apple being fricky with their ratings. That’s chicken shite if you ask me.

they are free if you can live with waiting an hour or two after the race to watch them. There is a nice place on reddit called "motor sports replays" w/out spaces that is very helpful. You can watch in 720p, 1080p and even 4k HDR10 if you so choose. You can choose F1TV commentators or Sky Sports commentators, too.

Again, the product is good... I just think in the grand scheme of things its a bad idea to put it behind the paywall.

Same was said a decade or more ago in Europe. Seems to be working fine for them.

DTS crowd was eventually going to fall off. Many factors will contribute to the eventual fall off.

Skysports is to the UK what ESPN is to the US. Its part of regular cable broadcasting packages.

Its not a stand alone service in which you have to have a separate app/account as the only means to get it.

Now if Apple goes the route of Hulu/YoutubeTV/DirectTVNow and becomes a one stop cable provider, they may knock it out of the park.

I believe people are consuming media in a different manner than in the past.

You might be surprised how many people have a la carte vs a cable provider these days.

No, not surprised, theres been a massive shift from Cable providers to the likes of Hulu, Youtube TV, Fubo, Sling, Tubi, etc... But again, almost all of those also have ESPN with them. So if you take the streaming subscribers plus people with traditional cable (comcast, charter, directv) the total number is going to be pretty comparable to 5-10yrs ago.

They took F1 and put it on a single, pay walled, platform. A lot of people on here even thought at least the US based races would be free or partnered on another service for wider reach, but that isn't the case. Platform is great, but reach is going to be the issue.

Its a huge gamble and I guess we will eventually find out how it plays out.

I appreciate you carrying on this fight. We had HuluLive, now DirectTV streaming, both of which have ESPN. I already piss and moan about the prices of those and refuse to add another subscription service just for F1, of which with 2 little kids has dwindled my time to sit and watch a race anyway. I agree with you, I suspect viewership through Apple has fell off, possibly quite significantly. I keep up here, I watch the highlights, etc, and I don't really feel like I've missed a whole bunch.

I saw a video of the golfer Kevin Kisner talking about playing the British Open. He said it’s not worth playing in the UK because of the taxes. Said the UK tries to tax them on 1/52nd of all their sponsorships for the week they are there. I’m sure it’s the same for F1 drivers with maybe even more sponsors.

Italy is going after the drivers for some of that money they earn.

There are probably reciprocal taxes depending on your country although you still pay a higher tax rate and have to file. True for anyone who works in foreign countries and make a lot of money.

Old boy needs to lock in and stop worrying about publicity stunts like fancy boats and classic Ferraris.

No different than states with NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA.

Who was it during the superbowl that since they played in SF if they won and got the bonus they were owed or whatnot, they actually would have paid more in taxes than the bonus.

I knew about this but I thought it mainly only applied to their game check for that week. I know California wants taxes on 1/365th of your yearly earnings for every day you spend there working which is the same thing I guess but California is a 13% tax rate and the UK is 45% based on a google search I just did. Never been to the UK or California.
