There is a reason a lot of F1 drivers live in Monaco
Taxes

You're forgetting federal taxes too.
So althetes earnings in california are taxed like 45-50%

That's also tax rate on a certain amount. They have a progressive rate just like the US and California.

This is what I was talking about
quote:
For the 2026 Super Bowl in Santa Clara, California, players are taxed on their bonuses ($178,000 for winners, $103,000 for losers) through California's 13.3% "jock tax". Because of California's high tax rates and duty-day formula, player tax bills can exceed their bonus, potentially resulting in a net loss on the game itself.

I don’t think they have to pay these types of taxes for the middle eastern races. Prolly hurts their bottom line losing two of them this year.

Gonna have to explain this to me.
If they are taxing you at 13% or even 99% how can you have a net loss on the income you made?
Unless you are just saying they would have made more because they front load their contracts and theoretically don't get paid except for game days. Making the only days they "work" gameday. Which for players on the road is considered a loss anytime they play at a venue that has a higher rate than their home state.

I think that’s how it works. In NFL they get paid per game and they have to pay taxes in the state where the game is played. Yearly salary divided up into 17 pay checks. California charges “duty days” so they tax players a percentage of their salary for every day they are in the state. Teams that made the Super Bowl spent almost an entire week in the state. For a couple of the very highly paid, their tax bill for the week was higher than the bonus they got for playing.

Yep, just part of working in a state with taxes.
Every state above the average brings your net down and every one below the average brings your net up. Doesn't turn your net income negative.
This isn't player specific. People who work in different states get hit with this shite all the time. Usually there is a grace period but not always. You home state or country should offset the amount.

Fuji is a hard track, too. The third sector is brutal.

In wet conditions no less.

They are going to make a serious effort to fix the major PU issues for next year:

So a 55/45 split instead of 50/50.

Progress!
One thing I hadn't noticed before is that they went from 100 kg fuel in the previous era to 70 kg fuel in the current regs. That's a huge drop, and now the more they try to shift the balance back to the ICE, they run into the issue of the size of the fuel tanks. Making them bigger would require a redesign to the cars, so that may limit how far they can go, as well as possible reliability concerns for the engine according to this article:

Is that really what it is? If so, holy shite.
Talk about going all out

Yep. They walk so close on these regs making big changes isn't as easy as writing it down.
Development takes years and over a billion dollars. The teams have money but not enough to change it before recouping their investment over a 5 year formula.

About 50kwh = about 65 horsepower. So maybe it does get closer to 60/40.
Again, regen is the key and not shifting away to more ICE power. The reg changes at Miami showed that worked.

It’s not even technically 50:50 right now anyway is it?
It’s way closer than it should be but probably going to go from 55:45 to 60:40?
Whatever. It’s better than what it is now.
