You will likely lose the casual viewer. Plenty of people tune in because the racing was on ESPN/ABC/NBCSports. People waiting for the NFL to start or just the summer lull of no sports.
Now the casual viewer will have to have the Apple App plus be looking for something to watch. No chance of building your viewership base with that kind of access.
Yep. I'm not adding yet another fricking streaming subscription just for this. I'm out after this year.

This thread is full of people who do indeed mind, F1 is probably on the brink of being irrelevant in the US again.
Seems to have generated a lot of comments so far just a few hours post announcement.
I’d be aggravated if I weren’t already a subscriber.

Yea I'm not willing to add another subscription service to the fold, especially considering due to life stuff I'm getting to watch less and less races live as they happen, and most of the time I find myself just catching the highlights on Youtube after. If this was 3 or 4 years ago, then I'd probably just subscribe, but my attention is waning, so throwing it up behind a paywall is probably the thing that'll cut my interest almost entirely. Maybe I'll start following MotoGP more closely, maybe I won't.
And I'm certain I'm not the only one that feels this way.

I already have Apple+ so this sounds like an upgrade to me if I can get the F1TV and multiview but I understand people not wanting to sign up. And I might have to rethink it when they inevitably hike the price next February right before the season starts.
MotoGP is in Australia this weekend. Their races are at worse times to watch here in the central time zone. This weekend their sprint race is at 11pm tonight and the feature race is at 10pm tomorrow night. A lot of their races come on at 3 or 4 in the morning and since it’s on FS1 replays can be hard to find.

I'm just going to torrent/plex F1 races instead of watch on ESPN.

How are you watching? Why not just use DVR feature?

I have the AppleOne subscription and the Apple shows are good. I dropped Netflix and HBO recently but kept AppleTV. So no concerns.
Now if commercials pop up I’ll be irate.

F1 is getting blasted across socials…. It’s pretty hilarious, in their IG announcement, the first 4-5 comments applauding the move are from racing teams, then after that it’s pure negativity from the fans.
F1 fricked up unless there is some sort of broadcast streaming deal we don’t know about.

I use a friends DirectTV login. Can watch anything live using my laptop but can’t set things to record.

I don't think Liberty realize how many of their viewers aren't going to search out F1 nor even know when the races are on or even if F1 is racing that week. They may very well have Apple TV but not even know there is a live event playing. ESPN has a captive audience already and people visit their website and social media.
ESPN isn't steady running commercials, but the advertisement is on the game banner and the faces of the racers get out there. You come across the promotion while watching other sports.

You have a few options with this. I assume this is DirecTV stream? If so:
1) they can set you up your own profile so that you can record whatever you want and you can use the service like any other normal user and not interfere with their setup
2) you can use the same directv login you already use on the Fox Sports app and easily find the MotoGP races within seconds. You can even create a Fox Sports profile and it will auto save your preferred content in a location so you dont have to search.

I think it’ll be interesting to see how much ESPN drops any and all coverage of the sport after the deal is done.
They’ve done a good job showing it this whole time but I don’t think they actually care that much about it.

I did not know about this, will be trying them out. Thanks for the info.
I’ve really gotten into MotoGP the last couple years. It’s the best racing and overtaking they just race in the middle of the night most of the time.
The last few races should be good. The championship has already been decided. Marc Marquez dominated this season but the week after he locked up the championship another rider crashed into him and he broke his shoulder or collar bone. Prolly won’t race the rest of the season so wins are up for grabs.

I hope you can find time to get into Moto3 and Moto2. They are even more entertaining than MotoGP. There is an American rider in moto 2 (Joe Roberts) that is pretty good when healthy. Moto3 and moto2 are rider championships where as MotoGP is constructors so the lower ones have much crazier races with tons of parity.

This going to be a disaster
It’s been a total failure for MLS who did the same and they had Messi
Wonder if Apple will do their own coverage and venture away from Sky Sports
Sky Sports F1 coverage is unmatched

Only with boomers. Most people won’t mind.
MLS says otherwise
A league mostly popular with left leaning younger people who are tech savvy have all but turned it into a forgotten part of the soccer landscape going into a World Cup because its viewership has dropped and that’s while having the most popular player in the world in the league.

I haven’t watch Moto2 or 3 but just because of the times they race. I had no clue there was a promising young American. Will have to check it out.
