The FIA is assessing whether RB driver Yuki Tsunoda has breached Formula 1’s rules when he appeared to make an ableist slur during Austrian Grand Prix qualifying.

At the end of Q1 in Austria on Saturday Tsunoda appeared to say, "These guys are fricking retards," after being overtaken in the pitlane by Zhou Guanyu, as Tsunoda queued in the fast lane and the Sauber driver was waved out by a mechanic.

The profanity on the radio is OK, it's just the "ableist slur" that might have breached F1 rules.

Since English isn't Yuki's first language, and he's only been immersed in English for a few years, his slang is obviously absorbed by the guys around him. But more importantly, I'm sure he consumes the majority of his media in Japanese. He has had no opportunity to even discover that the English slang 'retard' is considered an "ableist slur." Especially because I'm sure he's never even been introduced to the idea of ableist slur in Japanese media.

Haas can’t catch a break. Reg race finish 11th. Sprint race finish 9th. Both just out of points.

I say award 11th (and 9th for Sprint) 1/2 point. Then don’t add it to points standing until you get 2 of them so 1 point for two 11th place finishes. Would give bottom half of field something to chase yet would not upset the normal points standings at top.

The claim for the past few years is that he learned English from the mechanics on his cars.

I'm sure they call plenty of people and things retarded.

Including the FIA.

I think all drivers from p1 to p20 should get points. It would make things much more interesting especially with the slower teams that cannot hang with the faster teams.

Just caught the sprint. Entertaining for the first few laps. Incredible camera shot of the two Mclarens tailing Max out of turn 4. It got real boring afterwards, partially because of the lack of the timing screen.

Anyone been watching the 24h of Spa? Currently under SC, but it's been raining like a motherfricker. There was a big wreck earlier after La Source. Everyone ignoring yellows and just blasting down to Eau Rouge and a Porsche hits a stationary Ferrari. LINK

Clearly he picked up some choice words casually among his racing colleagues, and from context understood "retarded" to mean stupid. It would be a stretch to think he learned that "retard" originally meant what we now refer to as a "mentally challenged" individual and that it was now not socially acceptable. Also note that "baka" is a very common Japanese insult that means stupid or moron. He probably thought it was the equivalent word and never gave it a second thought. This should have been a teaching moment, and the fine should have been 100% suspended until there was a second offense.

When Yuki got back to the team after his meeting with the FIA, one of the mechanics probably laughed in his face and said "You retard! You're not supposed to say it on the radio!" then fist-bumped him, shook his ahead in amusement one last time, then went back to work.

Could have kept going straight and missed him easily like the other two cars.

"Nah, let's cut it hard to the left."

Naw, just 1-19. The straight up closer id the race shouldn't get shite.

You should get 1 point for each car you finish ahead of.

This would put way too much emphasis on just avoiding DNFs.

Hoping Lando can somehow overtake Max and hold it... Wonder if Mclaren will go the strategy route again, instead of just letting him race and react to whatever RB does.

Hoping Piastri can move up into the Top 5 and Checo crashes out with no points.

Surprised we haven’t gotten a 5 second penalty for Checo running Piastri off the track on lap 1
