Yup, it was obvious, if Alpine wasn't willing to give Alonso the multi-year deal he was seeking, it was because they were looking to promote Piastri. They were probably planning to loan him out to another team for next year, now they have to take the risk of going backwards in the championship next year as Piastri gets up to speed, and losing millions of dollars.

Oscar Piastri - I understand that, without my agreement, Alpine F1 have put out a press release late this afternoon that I am driving for them next year. This is wrong and I have not signed a contract with Alpine for 2023. I will not be driving for Alpine next year.

What a cluster. There is an unconfirmed report that Piastri's contract stated Alipne had to find him a seat by July 31st or else he was free to cancel the contract.

I mean this all but confirms that Zach's "mechanism" to replace an under performing Ricciardo was Piastri right? I don't see another reason to not jump at the chance to grab the F1 seat.

I certainly get the shite show if he never agreed or whatever but...

Why would he not agree to this? It seems the only other potential opening would be McLaren. Meaning the big 3 won't have any openings, and Alpine is right there with or even ahead of McLaren, so doesn't this seem like the perfect landing spot to start his career?

Obviously could be contract details holding him back I guess?

Holy shite, this is just like the Palou announcement.

Team puts out a press release saying "He's driving for us next year!"

Driver tweets "No I'm not!"

Lots of communication issues lately.

Another possibility I'm reading now is he may already have a signed contract with Williams that hasn't been announced.

That would suck for him if so.

So this means Mclaren must be ready to buy out Ricciardo. Grab some popcorn if Alpine decide to force the issue.

Guess that tweet from Alpine is one way to get Webber to return their call.
