The PU is the least of Williams’ problems. They haven’t designed a remotely competitive car since Pat Symonds left. Putting a VW into it wouldn’t help anything.

If it wasn’t for Claire, they probably don’t switch to Merc in 2014. I’d blame Paddy Lowe more than Claire personally…but she certainly didn’t do everything right.

I thought they should have boxed Sainz about 5 laps earlier as well, when he originally asked to come in. The way Perez and Russell were fighting, and with how Sainz was driving at the end, he may have actually had a chance to get back ahead of both because he was taking significant chunks of time from them. I assume he wouldn't have been able to go as all out on the tires, but I think it would have been a better chance than what happened.

Porsche and Red Bull are about to announce a 10 year partnership.

quote:

Documents published by Morocco’s Conseil de la Concurrence have revealed Porsche’s intention to acquire a 50% stake in Red Bull’s team.

VW Group’s former CEO Herbert Diess previously revealed that Porsche and Audi had decided to enter F1 although no official reveal has been made about their intention to enter F1 in 2026.

Motorsport-Total originally reported that documents, which have also been seen by us at WTF1, were lodged ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix. These documents suggest the intent for Porsche to acquire 50% of Red Bull Technology Ltd.

A joint venture would see Red Bull and Porsche develop and manufacturer a power unit for 2026, when F1 is set for another regulation change.

The second brand of the Volkswagen Group, Audi, whose Formula 1 entry has already been approved by all the necessary bodies, is not yet as far along with its project as Porsche.
Motorsport.com understands that the Ingolstadt-based company is still negotiating with Sauber owner Finn Rausing about the acquisition of 75 percent of the team shares.

Frank was stubborn to a fault, and it cost him in the end. He was unable to adapt his management style to a changing world. The whole Newey fiasco set Williams back immensely. Newey wanted more input and ownership in the team, and Frank was too stubborn to let that happen.

Its even worse than that. It's not just that Frank was too stubborn to give Newey more input, it was actually signed in his contract that Newey would be consulted on various issues, but Frank still left him out of the loop.

It wasn't until I read this article that I started to understand all of the weird stuff that happened at Williams in the 90s:

https://the-race.com/formula-1/the-1990s-mistake-williams-never-recovered-from/

They treated two world champions Mansell and Hill poorly and I always wondered what had happened in their respective situations. Williams hired Heinz-Harald Frentzen to replace Hill before Hill even started his championship-winning 1996 campaign!

Interestingly, Patrick Head blames the Hill situation on Hill's manager, who Head says was a piece of work. But...

quote:

In retrospect, Head believes Williams and Hill were wrong to part ways. "It was a big mistake and maybe egos and other things got in the way," he said.

The downfall of Williams is the fault of Frank Williams (or maybe the combination of Frank and Patrick Head).

I've said a couple of times in the F1 threads the last few years that (aside from Bernie on the business side) I think Adrian Newey is the single most valuable member of F1 of the last 30 years. Of course one could make the argument for Ross Brawn as well. It's certainly not a driver, even when they are credited with providing great technical input. F1 makes drivers into legends, not the other way around.

Sir Frank started at the bottom and amassed 9 constructor's championships, which is second most behind the Scuderia.

It's a shame that Williams is not competitive anymore.

Great history lesson everyone has been giving me on Williams, BUT...

History is exactly that!

My question is NOW and Going forward what would all of us want to be Team Principals do?

Just be Mercedes Bitch or try and actually do something? There is no wrong answer.

Hell no, Toto would annoy the shite out of me because of his handsom smugness.

Probably depends on the financial stability of the organization, but obviously if capable being on your own is the preferred option.

However, if we have been mismanaged so poorly we can’t afford the development or relationships to do this on our own we will compromise until we can usurp those wankers.

Will we actually see a white Ferrari this weekend?

quote:

Haas’ car is set to look very similar to the Ferrari at this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix as a result of their new upgrade package.

Ferrari came into the season with a unique sidepod design, and the F1-75’s chassis, power unit and effective upgrades to the wings have helped Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz to four wins between them this year.

I hope it is as the melts will be glorious.

Would love to see them jump up in performance. Would also be hilarious if they start pushing the parent team.

Keep in mind, Williams is essentially VW Motorsport's F1 team

So if Audi joins in, that's 3 VWG teams

Will Vettel find a way to keep speaking out on his environmental and rainbow causes? Or will we only hear about it while he has the easy platform of F1 to get the word out? The other big news apparently is that Vettel has opened his first social media account, on Instagram. So maybe that will be his platform now.

Does any good driver want to drive for Aston Martin? Or will they employ a pay driver that no one will get excited about?

I'm sure IndyCar is already lobbying Vettel hard to come to the States. This seems pretty unlikely, as Vettel has four F1 championships so he doesn't have any "unfinished business" that would motivate him to make such a major change in his life. However if he doesn't race at all next year, he may find that he's not ready yet for a 100% domestic life and may be itching to find somewhere to race in 2024.

Was going to be my question…. At this point, they aren’t much better than Williams. Def bottom tier with Haas moving to mid tier
