whole lot of politics and sandbagging going on
I hope to see those teams competing at the front, but it's like someone going out fastest during warmups in practice. It means nothing.

They all have wind tunnels but by rule the wind tunnels are not full scale and there is some kind of rule about how much time they are allowed to use the wind tunnels they have. The flo-vis and the aero rakes allow them to get some real world correlation between what the wind tunnel says and what is actually happening at speed.

For sure. But the high lap counts and good times have me at least a little optimistic that both teams have their car in order going into the season

Looks like Merc added some new, bigger, relocated gills today

I hope so. Those two teams have possibly my four favorite drivers on the grid, and I'd like to see them at the top.

Here's a video showing the porpoising, it's a bit more violent than I expected.
LINK
Brings up a good question, doe Pirelli become concerned with potential for a high speed blowout? I'd imagine there's a ton of force being applied to a tire while doing 185+mph, now factor in a bouncing motion on the sidewall too.

Oh wow, that's a lot more pronounced than I expected.

So how fricked is Haas with sanctions against Russian oligarchs?

Where they finished in the championship in 2020 determines the amount of wind tunnel time they have for the first half of 2022. Oddly enough the boys from Maranello finished worse in 2020 than they have in decades.
The sliding scale gets reset at the middle of the season based on current WCC points.
The handicap system also constrains the CFD work. CFD limits are on both the computing power and time. This limit is one reason Ross Brawn thought the teams would have a hard time outsmarting the rules because the technical team setting up the rules used significantly more computing power (order of magnitudes IIRC) as well as significantly more time running the computers.
I think the aero restrictions are showing with Mercedes. The fact they came to Spain with such an array of bodywork indicates to me they had lots of ideas but not enough tunnel and CFD time to do proof of concept work. It may also be part of the reason they built a car not very far removed from 2021 on the top. If there is one thing Mercedes can do it is in-season development so any handicap initially will likely be wiped out in short order.
To the thread:
The porpoising concerns me but I think they can get it fixed within 6-8 weeks, the issue is solving it and NOT giving up performance. I would expect on at least one car solving the problem leads to a large loss of performance and someone will go the route of Sir Frank when Alan Jones complained about porpoising and just tell them to sit on their wallet, I guess it works better for the more well-compensated drivers.
I was actually wondering if Merc had built a donkey but when Russell said of Ferrari and McLaren "We all know we’re on different programs but we definitely know from the average of all the different runs we’re behind them at the moment" I knew they were fine. When Merc drivers say they have a donkey I know they are lying.
Sainz related the cars (at least the F1-75) is highly sensitive to fuel loads with huge deltas between light and heavy loads.
I have to admit that Max surprised me by overhauling his driving style completely based on trackside reports.

Fun answer: non issue, HAAS was already fricked before the year started
Legit answer: Well, considering Ferrari is HAAS's daddy, they shouldnt be in too bad of a situation... cost cap helps as well... only question is what their internal budget looks like and how much has already been allocated for the year

Haas to drop Uralkali Russian Branding for final day of F1 testing
This is going to get wild, I bet Netflix is scrambling to get a DTS crew out there ASAP.

Mazepin is scheduled to test tomorrow morning. It will be interesting if he does. If the sponsorship is gone, he would probably lose his seat since it was purchased.

Not just about sponsorship, but a potential boycott of and revoking travel / VISA / passport into certain countries.

Haas certainly has had their share of sponsorship blunders for such a very young team.
