The Tampa Bay Rays have reportedly held "preliminary discussions" about both Washington Nationals starting pitcher Max Scherzer and Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant ahead of Friday's 2021 MLB trade deadline. ESPN's Jeff Passan reported Tuesday the Rays are "expected to be active" to upgrade their roster before the deadline, even if they don't land one of those marquee names.

Passan also reporting Rays have had preliminary discussions about acquiring both Scherzer and Kris Bryant.

I know they still have one of the top farm systems even with Franco getting promoted, but I can't see them getting both with how stingy they can be.

Gallo -> Padres
Scherzer -> Dodgers
Bryant -> Rays

"I would like to trade for Max."

"I would be interested in trading Max."

"Cool...now what?"

[Rosenthal] Teams pursuing Scherzer believe Nats want to act within next 48 hours to create time to work through his no-trade. Chances of Scherzer making his start Thursday seem remote. Scratched from last start due to right triceps discomfit. Teams might ask: How do we know he is healthy?

Phillies were having trouble getting traction on Craig Kimbrel at last check. Richard Rodriguez is a possibility for Philly. Young catcher Rafael Marchan interests the Pirates as @JSalisburyNBCS reported

The White Sox and Red Sox are two of at least seven teams interested in Kimbrel, 670 The Score’s Bruce Levine writes, while the White Sox have also scouted another Cubs reliever in Ryan Tepera.

7 interested should drive the price up nicely.

[JonHeyman] Interest is predictably immense in Max Scherzer, who is suddenly the most impactful guy on the market and very likely to be traded. There are said to be about 14 teams that have called, including some barely in the race.

Scherzer was already arguably the best FA signing ever. Take on the residual value from the haul the Nats are about to get for the final two months of his 7 year deal and that just puts it over the top

Funny thing is about 10 days ago KB was linked to the Nats. Now half the league is trying to get Scherzer

Interesting. Both those teams have elite closers. So do they use Kimbrel as a set up guy or move their current guys from the 9th to the 8th?

Chiba Lotte Marines think Scherzer can out them over the top.

Statistically Kimbrel is better than both. I would image that he would be the 9th inning guy with the current guys going to the eight. Good problems to have either way.

Strasburg having thoracic outlet syndrome surgery. Typically don't come back from that but some have. Ends career for most though.

I'll never forget watching his debut. That was one of the most incredible things I've seen.
