I'm absolutely dead after a 25 mile ride with 2k elevation

Blah.
But seriously does Phil have a Cav Froome and Wiggins posters above his bed?

his lead out man is 2nd. What a strong team quickstep has brought.
I thought for a second his own teammate may win the stage

I'm with you. Did you think anybody was really going to challenge him? That might have been his easiest one.

Super happy for Cav but this isn't the strongest field of sprinters he's going against.

Agreed but on the same side of the coin Cav has lost 2 prime years and 2 on the back half of his peak of his career for stage wins.

without Ewan and Sagan it is a weak field but it's still impressive.
Edit: last years Green Jersey winner Sam Bennett not being here either.

I have been thinking about this the last few days, while I have always been a big Cav fan (not in small part to his interview style) Eddie is legend.
The truth is any career record is going to have its share of stats built on the occasional weak field and Eddie's were no different it is just Cav's are at the end in clear focus. So while slightly bittersweet I will be rooting for him next Friday and Sunday.
It is nice to see some of his wins this year have been with textbook perfect lead-outs and some from out of position in a completely cocked up sprint like today.

Some interesting comments from Merckx post race. I'm sure there will be more to come on that.
Post 2 updated.
Back to mountains we go. These 2 weeks have flown by.
Happy Friday friends. Have a great, safe weekend

That's a good amount of vert for 25 miles. Anything over 1000 ft gained/10 miles ridden is what I would classify as mountainous. So you are close. You most be riding the hills of Austin to get that kind of vert gain in Texas

The Cannibal is 76 so he can say whatever he likes and he certainly wasn't wrong. I do think it would nice if he left that to others to say. Even casual cycling historians aren't going to equate Eddie's 34 to however many Cav finishes with they are arguably different records in a sense. That being said I think Cav deserves the spotlight now and the discussions about how it slots into history are for another day.

Cav completely ignoring the Merckx question(s) in his post-race presser and just going off on a tangent instead

I agree with you 100% on this.
As a side note and as a history buff Rouleur continues to put out the best debriefs and historical article emails. Love this mag. Give them a go if you get a chance.
From the Can Hunt to the Sticky Bottle
quote:
Back in the early days of the race, the Tour de France had a drinking problem. We’re not just talking about alcohol, although we’ll get on to that shortly…
From the article
quote:
This practice lent its name to a Tour tradition: la chasse à la canette. The can hunt
quote:
La chasse à la canette. The can hunt. Parched team leaders would yell ‘café’ or a similar battle cry and the raiding party would take shape. Bar owners in the nearest town would stand by, bemused, as domestiques stormed through the doors and the plunder began. All of a sudden two dozen skinny sunburned Vikings would commence their two-wheeled supermarket sweep, shoving whatever they could find up their jerseys and into sagging pockets and making off without leaving so much as a centime. It wasn’t just a cool Perrier or Coca Cola either, since team leaders would often prefer something stronger. Look at this picture: that ain’t fizzy pop they’re pilfering from a nearby truck.
Again, Rouler is awesome in case don’t already know about them

I love Roleur even as a gear nut/weight weenie it is super refreshing to read something that isn't trying to sell me the newest frame, wheels, or groupset. It is the kind of mag that makes me want to get out and ride without looking at the cyclometer and better yet not sitting around in the garage wrenching on bikes just for the "fun" of it.
