Nah, we’ll “sort it out” in the playoffs

Nothing strange about it. There are no dominant teams and a ton of good teams.

These upsets are great but it sucks that they don’t ruin seasons anymore

In 2007, Texas’s season would be over at this point and so would Bama

Both teams are now still able to get to playoff

So, in the past, each team would sleepwalk through six more meaningless games. Now, each team has to fight for their season the rest of the way. The new way sounds much better.

in recent history, that is incredibly strange. how many times in the last 15 years could you not peg 3-4 teams who would win the title by november 1st

Where in the hell did this idea come from that these games were "meaningless" in the past just because teams were knocked out of the national championship picture? Can you tell me that?

Did all of those classic Iron Bowls and Third Saturdays in October where there were no national title stakes in play feature teams that were sleepwalking through their schedules? I don't think so. Because winning the national championship wasn't the end all, be all objective of the college football season.

That's why we had subjective polls from sportswriters and coaches at the end of the year awarding trophies to the teams they thought were the best in college football. For decades the name of the game was beating your rival, winning your conference, and representing at a prestigious bowl game on New Years' Day in Miami, Dallas, New Orleans, or Los Angeles.

No because you still had a shot a new years six bowl which was still seen as prestigious and something to go for. The whole we lost and can't make the playoffs thing is something that's new and has appeared in part due to the expansion of the playoffs and the notion that if you aren't in it doesnt matter

exactly. at the end of the day there's one simple edict: nobody, en masse, asked for college football to be fixed. we didn't ask for this.

nobody even gave a shite about the title game by the time it rolled around last year outside of degenerate gamblers and the 2 teams playing because they drug it out so long. we were too saturated and it was too drawn out by then.

future title contenders are going to be playing the final with a ragtag group of duck taped together rosters full of mercenaries playing objectively horrid fundamental football. yay, they fixed what wasn't broken.

The majority of fans were asking for a playoff for years.

Recent history is the NIL/Portal/12 team CFP era. Anything that happened before then simply isn’t relevant to today’s landscape.

And last year at this time, the 16-0 national champions were not considered very real threats to win it all by most. Most on this board thought they were a joke and benefactors of a weak schedule. Nearly everyone thought tOSU would dog walk them. Then they thought bama would get it done

The other team that made the final didn’t even win the weakest power league in the country and lost to Louisville on 10/17 and SMU on 11/1 and only got in to distribute money to the ACC.

The SEC champs were ranked #9 or 10 at this point last season

Oklahoma was top 5.

Meaningless? Are we just going to ignore LSUs fiesta bowl win vs UCF and how that very clearly led to Joe Burrow becoming what he did the next year and really that entire team as a whole? Hardly meaningless as are many other games like that which served as spring boards for future years

Where did I say expanded playoffs change things?

Miami was closer than anyone to beating Indiana in the playoffs, and they were the most controversial playoff team of all time and shouldn’t have been in.

The crying about giving 13-24 a play-in game is hilarious. You should probably just dump the sport.
