No I think it’s more likely he was checking to make sure nothing was going to fall off of it like what happened to him at the PGA championship

What do you mean every break????? He put himself in a position to win…. There really weren’t any real lucky breaks….

I could not disagree with you more. Thought it was a fantastic venue and a fantastic tournament. Obviously there wasn’t an amazing finish, but the tournament as a whole was super exciting.

The whole point of links golf is that the wind and ground conditions force you to play it on the ground much more. These guys were able to play it like a parkland course. And the firm fairways with soft greens made for a combination allowing guys to hit 3 woods off the tee and short/mid irons into receptive greens. The odds makers had put the winning total at 7 under to start the week, but the weather never showed up. Really only 3 guys with a chance to win at the start of today meant an easy day for the front runners, and it played out pretty much the way everyone thought with Louie folding and Collin and Jordan separating themselves. I’d much prefer the normal years with 5 or six guys within a few strokes and nothing being a safe lead due to the course conditions and weather. This had none of that.

He had a few breaks where his lie was really good in the rough after poor shots. He played well. Wasn’t trying to just say he was lucky which he was some and almost all are to some extent that win majors. Let’s just say he didn’t have any bad breaks. He hardly missed a putt as well which was my question to begin with. How many putts did he have and feet made?

Pretty impressed by Collin. Guy strikes his irons well. He needs to, because he’s doesn’t hit the ball a long way at all. Louis was outdriving him by 40 yards all day and Louis isn’t the longest driver out on tour by any stretch of the imagination. If Collin ever adds any weight and strength, he might win over a dozen majors with his smooth swing. Collin winning so frequently at a young age when being probably in the bottom 5th percentile in terms of actual length he hits his clubs is very impressive.

Maybe he’s got that smooth swing because his physiology is exactly what it needs to be.

I’d submit he is as good as he is and successful because he’s got the mental aspect of pro golf under control. The physical aspects don’t need tweaking, in his case.

He had a ton of good bounces on those bumpy fairways. He also had good lies in the rough. It’s not what caused him to win but it didn’t hurt his chances.

His putter won him the tourney though.

Collin is pretty good. Records from yesterday.

The only other man to win two majors in his first eight starts? Bobby Jones, per golf stats guru Justin Ray. It took Woods 18 majors to get two, though six of those were when he was still an amateur.

And yet, all these feats could wind up paling in comparison to another pointed out by Ray on Sunday afternoon, one that literally puts Morikawa in his own class. With his Open win, he is now the first player to win two different major championship debuts:

He can contend in a mediocre putting week because he strikes the ball so well. There’s a reason he has more tournaments he’s won (5) then missed cuts as a pro (4).

Collin is certainly the real deal. You can tell the commentators are getting real tired of the Bryson DeRambo's of the PGA. They call these guys part of the bomb and gouge approach to golf and it doesn't sound like a compliment.

If anything holds Collin back in his career it's how poorly he putts in a lot of tourneys. Then he finishes #1 in putting at a major again, really weird. I will say the guy has ice water in his veins and he can stand over most any putt on a back 9 on Sunday and not flinch. That's money. His maturity and creativity are in another galaxy so I do expect lots of wins from this guy.

I'm not calling those breaks. His misses were always on the second cut, it was amazing watching that kind of precision in a heavy pressure situation. Not to mention his putter was on fire. Spieth lost this tournament on 17 & 18 on Saturday or this would have been an epic finish with those two in the final group.

Players who have now won 2 majors before turning 25:

Collin Morikawa
Jordan Speith
Tiger Woods
Rory McIlroy
Seve Ballesteros
Jack Nicklaus

Collin is standing in high cotton.

Would have been Spieth and Oosthuizen in the final group instead, not Spieth and Morikawa.

Yeah. I've heard Jordan say that in his presser and golf interview. Louie would have gone away but Collin was the problem. Besides the 2 bogey's on the front 9 by Jordan in the final round were just as easily the culprit. It's so easy to look back and find a couple of holes players messed up "Royally."

I think that is selective memory. It varied greatly by the bounces on the drives. There were times where Morikawa outdrove Louis by 20+ yards and there were a few holes where Morikawa's 3wood was right there with Loui's driver.

All in all they seemed to be very similar in distance off the tee.

111 total putts for the week. Less than 28/round.
