The only justification you have right now for an 8 team field is it would allow all of the conference champs in.
Having said that, every year, at least one of the playoff games is a total blowout. Expanding to 8 would just be a charade. Lets find 4 good teams before we worry about 8.
2015:
Oregon 59
FSU 20
2016:
Alabama 38
Michigan State 0
2017:
Alabama 24
Washington 7
Clemson 31
Ohio State 0
2018:
Alabama 24
Clemson 6
2019:
Clemson 30
ND 3
2020:
LSU 63
Oklahoma 28

NFL probably has the most parity of any professional sports league in the world. College Football is dominated by a small handful teams. Not much to think about here.

why can't CFB increase?

I’d like to see a 6 team playoff with the top 2 seeds getting a bye, but also requiring you to play in your conference title game to be eligible for the bye week.
Keeps emphasis on the regular season, eliminates unearned disadvantages for playing in a conference title, adds more revenue, gives the flexibility so you’ll always have enough spots for the teams that deserve it, while eliminating the undeserving ones before the semi final
Higher seed hosts at their stadium.
Or add in two more bowls and eliminate the rotation they currently have for the big bowl games

yeah, the LSU-OU game was so awesome and exciting, we need more of that

Funny. When it’s too few, it stops meaning

Anything based on conferences won’t work until there are more spots than conferences. Don’t be a bunch of Clay Travises, people. None of you are as stupid as him or his readers.

I would actually love to see more diversity amongst the top teams in CFB annually.
Do you really believe a radically expanded playoff set-up is the only way to achieve that?

How conceivable is it that conferences would play their CCG’s the final weekend of November? That would allow for home site playoffs and not mess with the calendar. If this can be done, expansion to 8 can be done.
Last weekend of August thru November is 14 weeks. 12 games + off week+ CCG. No room for error though.

Of course not. I just think it’s the quickest path.

I’ve actually been a proponent of 6 with the top 2 getting byes. No conference championship auto bids though. Bring back the BCS rankings

6 is greater than 5

Where and when ?
Push back the championship game by a week, insert extra week of playoffs. That was easy

How eager are FBS conferences to play their CCG Black Friday & Saturday?

By your standard fcs shouldn't have a playoff at all. Just hand the title to NDST.
It's about fanbases and the money they spend. More fans involved means more money for everyone involved. Reason #1 why the playoff will eventually be expanded. Fans are more apt to travel, therefore spend,if something of value is to be gained by their team. Meaningless bowl games are not reason enough for major programs and their fans. Lots of times the players don't even care about them.

They already clarify a different between 5 conferences and the rest. Not that hard.

I mean I didn’t see you ask the when part the first time. Simply skimmed over it in your post, the answer was pretty obvious so I didn’t think to put it originally

You don’t have to move championship weekend

CFB has no parity. There’s 6-8 programs that realistically have a chance to win rings often. There’s another maybe 6 that have a chance less often. Then there’s maybe 12-15 that have a sliver of a chance but not really. The rest are irrelevant and under the current system, always will be. They have no path to relevance. Being a fan of those programs is legitimately a waste of time unless it’s your alma mater.
A larger playoff won’t make it easy for parity to happen, but it definitely makes it easier than it is now. If teams outside of those top 10-12 teams are occasionally getting a shot at the big shots, they will also occasionally get a shot at real national relevance and can maybe forge an actual path to being a relevant program long term
I’ll also add that most fans are in denial of this or have no interest in changing it because they benefit. LSU fans, Bama fans, OSU fans, OU fans, etc, we all benefit from this system and are OK with it for that reason
