Either way, I don't want to ever hear anyone bitch about non-conference champions getting into the CFP ever again. We're going to get at least two in there this year. The playoffs were created as a reaction to a non-conference champion winning the national title in 2011. It's happened twice in the CFP era.

Which is why having a Conference Championship game is dumb. They play a round robin schedule. TCU beat everyone in the conference, but Kansas State is the conference champion because they beat TCU in a rematch.
Alabama (and people forget this, but Nebraska was the first) made the BCS Championship, and you've had 2 teams make the CFP, and all of those did so without even playing on conference championship weekend.

But even in the case of the PAC-12, it's dumb and can hurt teams like USC that finished with the best record.
Just don't pull a Big 12 Ala TCU/Baylor, and you're fine. Refusing to name an outright champion when you had a clear head-to-head result was stupid.
