To the retirees….

Picked good time to retire (Feb 26). Not sarcasm.

Went 50% stocks, 20% bonds, 30% cash equivalents to mitigate sequence of returns risk (and stash dry powder. Bond yield inversions (Q325) had my attn).

Interest rates rise or fall…natural hedge between bonds and cash.

While allocation is not built for 30yr retirement (God willing), this real-time time first “test” of retirement peace of mind is proving to be so far so good.

My boogie man panic comes from after-tax lifetime income decline. Stay away taxes!

Against my usual judgement, I sold a measured slice of my leveraged ETF (TQQQ) because it had almost doubled in price and I told myself there was no need to be greedy in retirement. I also told myself that if I missed out on any massive gains that would be fine by me because the bird in the hand was real enough to actually improve my income generation situation and also pad my reserve.

I'm glad I made that move with it down from sale price of $84.75 to ~$73 now. Having said that, I use a quarter-to-quarter view when I make my usual trades. At the start of the quarter the price was $44.03. The point is the value is still extremely high relative to when I bought at $44.

At the end of the quarter I'll just reset my funds to base allocation and be happy.

Lotta “grandpa’s stock market” talk in today.

Volatility is bad?
Sell in May and go away?

Just why? I happen to enjoy V shaped dips and recoveries. It’s the slow sell offs that are the scariest. I guess there will also be the obligatory 95th annual September crash

Equally large number of this time it’s different people. Sunshine pumpers with the whole “stonks only go up, bruh” mentality. One of us will be right. One of us will be wrong. I’ll be back in October to acknowledge I was wrong if it happens. I assume the same will be true for you.

Why do you think we will continue to go up in perpetuity?

Energy costs are beginning to burden this economy. There is no clear path out of Iraq right now. Trump clearly thought we would overwhelm Iraq and this would be lightening fast. Shocker that a U.S. president underestimated how long a war would need to last. The AI momentum trade is being flushed out. That is going to bleed into the broader market. Crypto has been down for a while, so we will not see a large rotation out of crypto to buy the downswing.

My guess is this going to be a slow bleed from June 1 through the second half of September. It’s been many years since I suggested the market would be down for a foreseeable period. Hopefully I will be wrong.

Other than some individual moves it does not impact my investing strategy. I moved into small cap energy in late May. We’ll see how that holds up for the next four months. But I am still DCAing, just like I have been for the last four years of this massive bull run.

This is the fallacy of getting into names expecting that to always happen when momentum names dip.

Some stocks will end up looking like Ls. The letter L. Not V

Stocks like PayPal and Square never came back. Roku. They didn’t go out of business but they also never returned to what they were rated. Weed stocks same thing. Lot of online retail names as well. ANF. ELF. Tons of mega cap Chinese tech like Bidu and Baba too

I can names tons of stocks that were 5-10 baggers, lots of momentum, and nothing changed about their business. In fact in some cases their financials got better yet stock price dropped and never came back.

May need a raincheck on the fema camps. Well at least until the next dive. I did buy another share of AVGO on the dive. Diamond hands

I have all my shite on auto pilot and never really make any big moves. When I see the board chattering about being down I throw a grand or two at stuff. Last week I bought more HGRAF and dram.
