Go back. They are always hiring.

Avoided Big 4; 15+ yrs in industry. No regrets here.

Yes, B4 consulting. Zero regrets for going to industry.

(I have been very fortunate with how my career has worked out and consider my case to be an exception). Most of the people I know who left are happy though.

I could likely be back in the B4 by end of week if it was something that I had any interest in doing (no thank you.)

Big 4 consulting here. Wanted to leave while I was in audit. Made a couple of internal moves to get here.

will be tough to keep traveling with children, so that is probably my shite or get off the pot time.

What function were you in?

I was in Tax which wasn't all that bad. Nowhere near the travel the Consulting guys do.

I always wondered what tax people move onto - are you doing similar work for your new gig?

4 years and counting. Can't believe I'm still here. Made an internal move within Advisory to specialize in an industry and it's a move in the right direction. I'll probably stay until manager, but I really look forward to the day I jump out of B4 and try another line of work.

In. Left audit after 3 years. Sometimes I feel like I may have left a bit prematurely but every night when I get to see my kids at 6pm I remember why I left.

Currently in Big 4, audit.

Did some time (small amount) in consulting for the same firm as well.

There are days in which I love my job. Then there are days in which I count down until my time is up in B4 (mainly during busy season).

The thing is, I can't imagine myself in industry. I'm afraid that I will get stuck in repetitive work that will cause me to die of boredom, maybe I have a flawed view of industry.

Also, I don't really know what I want to do after B4 audit.

Started in big industry & looking to move out. This was my fear, and it absolutely came to fruition.

You do. "Industry" is whatever you make it. Find an interesting job and don't work as a book keeper.

Started Big 4 Consulting out of college.
Left for Industry 3 years later.

BEST DECISION EVER.

7 and a half years in. Still cranking away.

Trust me if you want to return to your firm you can easily return (at least from what I've seen in advisory). I've seen so many leave and boomerang a year (sometimes less) later.

As long as you didn't leave like a jerk they will welcome you back with open arms and be very appreciative of your "rotation" in industry.

What if you're not former big four, is it possible to get in?

Depends what do you currently do and what you want to do in the Big 4....

I've worked for a couple of larger firms (but never Big 4/6/8) and I currently work for a very large local firm.

At least 2-3 times a month, I am contacted by Big Four recruiters. When we talk, it's usually in discussion for a lateral move.

I like the spot I'm at right now, so it's never gone beyond the initial discussion phase. But if you have some good experience, you can probably find a way in.

How do they treat compensation? If someone got a sizeable raise leaving for industry (this is normal) and then comes back to the consulting firm (presumably in the same title) does the firm give an additional comp bump?

^^If true, this would be a classic case of what ticks off folks at the firm...someone comes in externally earning more than people who have been trained at the firm from the beginning.

I was in the Big 4 for about 5 years, split time between audit and advisory. I now have been in an industry for about a year.

It is true that industry is repetitive and boring, but you get a lot more time to do other things besides just accounting and audit. Switching over has allowed me to spend more time with my family and start a side gig in real estate.

I would never have the time to do this in the big 4. I have more time to spend with my family, plus I make some additional income from real estate.
