It’s bigger houses
They don't build simple homes or "starter homes" anymore. The only homes available are the full thing with a dictionary sized amount of new regulations.

bigger cars
There is no "discount" vehicle anymore. Cars come , at the cheapest price range, with all the bells and whistles.

more food
All costs more including inflation.

more entertainment,
You can't just ride bikes around in cities like you once could. Higher density living = less space to roam, everything costs now.

Who started this model?
Well what does any of this shite have to do with Millenials, im turning 40. 2023 shouldn't be why you are broke, you should have already had a decade or more into your career if you are a mil.

I'm the youngest of 3 millennial siblings, with the oldest being right on the edge. But I'm single no kids and no debt outside of mortgage/car for now. Now, I have had my income increase 4x since I started working but I hustled for it. Even when I made less money I watched coworkers spend on extravagant shite for our pay range and wonder how they did it while I was paying down student loans and living like a college kid still. That's mostly what it boils down to is discipline and the lack thereof

It’s got to correct.
People keep telling themselves this, but it doesn’t. Unless there is a giant spike in unemployment, prices will just continue on the current trajectory. The market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent.

Unless you expect millennials or zoomers to live in the hood and risk getting assaulted or murdered.
Until our ship came in, and we could afford something in a nice neighborhood in 2017, we lived in the hood.
I was an eye witness to a drive-by in 2008 from my front porch. My next door neighbor was burglarized. Couldn't have stuff delivered to our house, had to have it delivered to work. Every once in a while a crack head would knock on your door trying to sell something he just stole, in one case, a broom. I had a swat team storm my shed with the WSB News Van in my driveway during a manhunt for a cop killer.
So yes, I'm an example of a person who lived in (more than one) starter home in the hood until we could afford something nicer. And we also had a kid in that starter home. It was a 2b 1ba. Had some beagles too. It can be done, and is done.
But I guess mill's and z's are just too scared of brown people to even consider living somewhere they can actually afford.

My in-laws did the same thing, except they were robbed in their driveway at gun point. At that point they said frick it and moved to an area they couldn’t really afford.
If you can avoid crime ridden shite holes, you should. Especially when they’re in cities where progressive DA’s aren’t prosecuting violent crime in the name of equity.

How many CEI points did this post get you?

We went the opposite route and just moved to a neighborhood out in the country vs living in a questionable area in the city. I'd still take the 45 min commute and copperheads over drive-bys

My wife and I are 45-50. I'd say we fall solidly into the upper middle class and have saved for retirement our entire careers. We won't sniff a 50s retirement, if for just health insurance alone.
Sure you can. Just don’t take any distributions /earn much income and you’ll qualify for the healthcare subsidy.
BS that’s even an option. Thanks Obama.

Obamacare is a boon to early retirees. With proper planning you can set yourself up to quite easily afford quality health insurance.

My wife and I have had no problem doing well as millenials. Covid did throw some wrinkles in our plans due to a move and job changes. It also derailed some of our retirement savings plans which I currently am struggling to reconcile the outlook; however, doing well with kids, no debt (except mortgage), and everything else.

I’m a young millennial and doing fantastic. I recognize that I’m the exception to the rule though.
Most people I know struggle with getting their first home and are late to have kids as a result. In LA, you’re either living in the hood or buying an average priced house or living way out in middle of nowhere. There are very few starter homes. And I’m talking people who got STEM or business degrees. Idk what the other degrees are doing, those people are massively struggling. I also recognize that those people are weak minded and making poor decisions, likely from how they were raised, but still underperforming their own potential
