The Average Salary by Age
siap

Can a 16-18 year old kid make 22k/year? $448.50 per week

The Average Salary by Age

quote:

Many Americans are unemployed or under-employed – working part-time when they would prefer to be working full-time – so take these BLS stats on average salary with a grain of salt because they only apply to full-time wage- or salary-earners. Within each age bracket, earnings vary widely by gender, race and education level, too. Some people also get income from sources other than salary and wage earnings – sources like investment income.

re: The Average Salary by Age
Well it says right there in the stipulations that it only applies to full time workers, so I assume there is a minimum work week hours minimum. That 16-19 salary is basically a 40 hour a week job at 11 bucks an hour. You can make more waiting tables. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

I agree with everything here minus the line of "want to be a full time employee." These people want to off time and not have to grind.

Not really close to the truth in my experience. People are forced to take a part time designation because their employer doesn't want to give them benefits. Even if they're working 35+ hours a week as part time.

Agree on the contract game being out of control. However, if you are good with money, you can come out a head. Old guys at work refuse to go fte. I asked one why, and he was like "I am not taking a pay cut."

It probably is. It is an average across the board. A lot of people barely make 30K a year.

I prefer median statistics and percentile charts when understanding these trends.

Nonetheless, these figures will make many MTB posters grateful for their positions.

Right, IMO median would be a more accurate representation of what a typical person in these age brackets is earning.

Well they didn't specify what kind of average. And I didn't see the raw data, so hard to tell.

re: The Average Salary by Age
This one will probably feel a little more believable. It's "middle income" by state and by household size (interactive so you can't grab an image url)

LINK

range displayed for each state is between 2/3 median to double the median, which is pew's definition of middle income.

eyeballing louisiana for a 4-person household, 50th percentile looks to be something like 75-78K
