Dave is good for way more than the average. He’s good for like 90% of America, maybe more. People on the MTB are like unicorns.

Best vacation with kids is camping trips and my mind can't be changed about this.

Agree, but I think a lot of other poor financial decisions compound things

Obviously, I agree whole heartedly. However, I understand the sentiment expressed in the article. It is at least related to the old adage about nobody on their deathbed saying, "I wish I had traveled less and had fewer adventures and rather invested more in mutual funds and real estate."

100% agree, probably 80 or 90. fricking hate disney, wish people would stop going there.
Why does it matter to you if people go to Disney? You have a choice not to go. You sound like a miserable frick.

Planning our trip for next spring. I think your flight are too high, cut in half; and lodging is too low, start by tripling.

We’re looking at about $5-6k for a family of 5 for a week at Disney, meal plan, and 4 park days. Between cc miles and vacation fund, we can foot it no problem. But I hear people at my kids’ school talk about it all the time.

Based on my anecdotal evidence, I think people are more willing to save for a trip like Disney each year, then build an emergency fund or fund a brokerage account.

When we went to Disney we paid for it the year before we went, it was easy, booked and made monthly payments so it was paid in advance, we researched food options and if you plan ahead food isn't outrageous. We also did lunch at the hotel room which was also the hottest and busiest part of the day so everyone got a break. I'll never go again, once is enough, but it wasn't so insane that it would drive me into debt.

Did you stay at an offsite hotel? Seems that would be a lot of trouble to leave parks to go eat lunch at the hotel if that were the case.

It is absolutely mind blowing to me that someone would pay that. Different strokes but there are 1000’s of trips that could be had for less and don’t involve standing in lines in the Orlando heat for hours.

It’s never really crossed my mind to finance a vacation. I guess it makes sense to catch the kids at the right age to make it magical for them. Some people really believe getting the DW experience as a kid is a rite of passage and necessary for proper development. Like team sports or college.

Still though, I can’t imagine taking on debt for an expensive vacation when you can find vacation opportunities for cheaper prices. I just spent $2000 at the beach, and yeah, I certainly desired to stay in a ritzy spot in Rosemary Beach. But I would never throw a few grand on a credit card for it. Our cheapo condo in Sea Grove was just fine and we had a good time.

Most people don't do an ounce of research before they book and it costs them thousands.

And I guarantee they are staying at one of the expensive resorts like the Grand Floridian instead of the Movie or Sports resort that is several times cheaper.

Your room is just a place to sleep on a Disney vacation, I've never understood paying so much for one even if you have the money to go to a nicer resort, much less if you're having to take out a loan or load up the credit card debt to even go.

Describe finance? Getting a loan? Affirm zero interest? Credit card where you could do 3,6, 12 month plan “for no interest and a fee”. You can easily do one of those credit card plans and split it up over 6 months and pay less than 100$ in fees, no penalty to pay off sooner. So you could “finance” a nice vacation for cheap and not have to blow your wad all at once.

When rates were low I could see doing it as more of an accountability thing. Instead of saving for X amount of time and then going on the trip, you finance it and pay it off, then do the same for the next one. Especially when you could get 0% interest on stuff.

But yeah to me if you don't have the cash to pay you don't go.

I don't hate it like so many on this site, but for us it's the whole nostalgia thing for my wife. Her family did the annual (or every other year) trip to Disney when she was a kid, so now she likes to go every few years to give our kids the same experience.

One year I showed her how we could do a beach house in Pensacola for a long weekend, a week in Gatlinburg, and we flew to the East Coast for 5 days for the same price as 5 nights in Disney. But she explained how the nostalgia means way too much to her, and how she wants our kids to have a little part of her childhood. So now, I just figure out the dates, wait for the better deals, then just book it.

Disney is worth ten times a week at a beach house in Florida. Only Louisiana people value the gulf beaches so much.

I agree. I would like to know the definition of if i is debt. I have recently discovered the power of cc points, like 15 years late. I booked our Hawaii vacation thru Chase and got a 5% rebate. I normally would not have done it, but we paid it off and enjoyed the points. Plus the additional premium on using the points to travel makes it basically 6% back.

I just find it hard to believe that almost half of the folks are really putting themselves in a high interest debt for Disney. Maybe I shouldnt be so naive.
