Please, please no one spend $1k on a watch with a movement that costs less than $40 on AliExpress...
Then don't buy one, then. Buy a Timex. Cheap and it works.
I don't wear a watch. I have one watch - it's my Dad's Rolex. I never wear it. It's big and heavy. But I will probably never wear it - at least not regularly.

No worries, I won't

Hard pass
If the Trump watch weren't an attempt to fleece people by simply attaching his name to random things, it would probably retail for about $250. Tons of other watches under $1k that offer significantly more value.

I wear a garmin golf gps watch.
It may be $99.
It has a time and date on the display when not in golf mode.

Hamilton, Vaer, Bertucci (I love my titanium field watch from Bertucci but the straps are proprietary) and looking at a few Mavens.
I’ve got a bertucci titanium that I wear hunting and fishing, it’s been great.
Got a bunch of blood stains on the canvas band

Not necessarily disagreeing with you—I’d never spend $1,000 on a seiko, but a ton of people would and do spend several hundred dollars on seikos

As someone who voted for the guy, please don’t blow $1k ($999.99 or whatever) on a vaguely Patek-shaped knockoff Trump watch.
Folks have recommended Hamilton and there’s a ton of traditional options they provide with a leather band you can check out in your price range. The Field Khaki is a classic.
You can never go wrong with a Seiko, the SPB and SSK models are both timeless options with different color varieties in your price range. Can be had on Amazon and you can easily swap bands as needed.

Movado
I still wear my movados and tag. I know they get a lot of hate in the watch world but my wife bought me my first $1000 plus watch and it was a movado. She had been after me for years to buy a nice watch and I just never would. She’s spent way more on my watches than I have over the years.

I would absolutely spend $1k, or more, on a Seiko. I also own three Seiko watches, two of which I did spend several hundred dollars on. I simply wouldn’t spend $1k on a Seiko with that movement. That’s the third party version of the movement that goes into the Seiko 5 line, which is a $150-$350 retail line.
To put a finer point on it, there is a world of difference between that movement: LINK
And this movement: LINK

$1000 is a weird price point for autos. In hindsight, i wish I had gotten either a cheaper auto or a $1000 quartz watch or saved up for a nicer auto, not a $1,000 auto.

I don’t disagree. I think the $600 or so range is the high end for “nice budget” automatics. Beyond that, I would rather save up a bit to grab something like a Nomos.

Great options in this price range. Many brands are part of the Swatch Group. Along with Hamilton, there is Tissot, Mido, and Certina. Many seiko options and believe it or not Timex is making some nice watches, as well as Casio and Citizen.
If you look used check out Longines

Agreed.
My $1000 auto is 10 years old, has had about $400 in service work so far, and keeps time worse than the $40 timex I bought about 20 years ago. The timex has had one DIY battery change, been beat to hell and back, and every time I dig it out of the junk drawer its still dead on.
I like my auto but I must admit spending $1000 on it was silly. Its near worthless used, service costs too much, it doesnt do its job well (keep time). It was a silly impulse purchase that I regret. $1000 is not a trivial amount of money for me and I expect basically anything that costs that much to last more than 15 years without exceeding its initial purchase price in repair work.

Unfortunately, I think a lot of watch companies figured out that the $1k range is a sweet spot for markup. You can grab the people who want “better” than a Hamilton/Tissot/Seiko but don’t want to spend the money to actually jump up a tier in watchmaking.

Galaxy Watch Classic with a nice leather band and few different faces for different moods.
Posted on 9/28/25 at 8:15 pm to Joshjrn
Yep.
$1000 is that magical "I want a nice watch" but not "I want a real actual nice $5k+ watch" bracket.
The unfortunate fallout from that is a market saturated with $1000-ish junk.

I’ve been keeping an eye on Lorier. They’re a micro brand that’s been doing some interesting things.
