I recieved a sign on bonus of aproximately 7% of my yearly salary when I joined my current company and I'm about to be getting paid less in my second year on the job than the 1st year on the job because they "can't give anyone more than a 3% raise" which I know is a bunch of bs. I really hope they realize the vast majority of employees are going to leave for better pay if they're not promoted, because no one is going to do the same or in my case more work for less pay. There is something intrinsically wrong about being paid less than what you made the previous year, unless of course we're talking about top dollar contracts. This is a job straight out of college.

lolz... It's going to be a long unpleasant life for you if you're having this much trouble figuring out you don't actually have a problem.

Thread should have ended here.
quote:

Maybe you deserve more than a 3% raise and maybe your company is paying under market. Entirely possible. Have you done any research to see where your comp is compared to market?

But there are a few things you need to understand.

1) Your sign-on bonus, especially as a recent grad, does basically three things: it ensures you show up (especially if you agreed to the job before graduation), it gives you some cash to buy some new clothes / work clothes / helps you relocate if needed, and it helps transistion you into the work world.

2) What size of a company do you work for? Larger companies often have this stupid thing called "HR" and one of the things they do is try to shove everyone's pay into "narrow bands". This is so no one sues the company alleging pay discrimination. If your boss is telling you after 1 year he can only give a 3 percent raise, it may well be that HR and his bosses have said the highest raise a first year can get is 3%.

3) You really, really need to understand the differences between bonus pay and base pay. Lots and lots and lots of professionals have total pay go up and down. If your base pay ever goes down, yeah that's a big problem. But bonuses can and do move around, sometimes nice and fat, sometimes no bonus at all. Sometimes completely in your control, sometimes not at all in your control.

You are a data engineer. I'm guessing (yes I'm stereotyping) that your social skills are poor. You come on here to complain, and when people try to help you understand, you jump all over them and basically say they don't know what they are talking about.

This isn't the O-T, man. People are honestly trying to help you understand what's going on, because we've all been a first year employee and didn't know anything about corporate life.

If after all of this, you still feel your current employer has "slighted" you, then since you say you are in an in-demand field, I would get in touch with a headhunter and see what they can do for you.

After reading this thread it has become very obvious.

The company is not giving him a raise because they want him to quit. Successful people who are pricks and pieces of shite are not fun to work with. OP clearly is a douchebag IRL and I have no doubt his co-workers hate him

Honestly, I hope your employer sees this thread somehow and releases you. We don’t need idiots like you eating up the payroll.

This dumbass went 10 pages deep before going into autistic rage and quitting

I’m also a millennial and can say for a fact this guy is just a dumbass. Everyone understands that a sign on bonus is a 1 time deal. The guy got a raise this year, and that’s essentially permanent. He has nothing to whine about except that he includes a sign on bonus in his salary, which he should not be doing. It’s two separate things. But the fact that guy raged for 10 pages and never admitted fault or changed his mind shows he’s not worth what he thinks he’s worth, and he’ll never move up in his career with that kind of attitude

After reading your second comment I have determined that this thread is the greatest troll thread in the world, or you are the dumbest person that has ever posted on this board.

Over-inflated sense of self-worth: Check
Overly defensive when shown to be wrong: Check
Message board melt when no one will tell him he's special: Check

Conclusion: Whiny millennial.

An employee is assigned a project site away from their home office. We will say 2-3 hrs away. Their company provides them a lump sum per month per diem for expenses while they are away. The following year, they are back in the office and not receiving the per diem, should the employee come to a message board and bitch because their total compensation was less than the previous year?

A bit of a hijack, but we have a field employee who was working out of town for several months getting a $25/day per diem with housing provided. He was recently moved back to work in Atlanta (where he lives) and is now complaining that he can't make his house payment without the per diem. He says he will have to rent his house out and move in with a friend/relative in Florida, and wants the company to provide him with a vehicle to go back and forth to Atlanta.

I just came here to tell hogsoy I got a one time 25% bonus for completing a large project, plus annual bonus, etc that year. The next year I did not quit my job when I did not get a 28% raise.

After reading this thread I feel sorry for his employer.

ETA: Can we focus on the fact that all these posts have 1 DV

OP triggered himself. That's quite an accomplishment!

Maybe we can move this to the O-T, where this type of melting belongs?

I take it you lacked a meaningful father figure growing up? Can we get some background on that? Just want to try to see if there is anyone else to blame for this idiocy.

You sound like a typical kid just entering the real work force. Except you have a really shitty and entitled attitude. You should get those squared away soon, or its going to be a long and disappointing work life for you.

Skipped a bunch of pages in the middle so I apologize if someone has already mentioned this, how does the op feel about high MLB draft choices getting a big signing bonus and then making far less playing minor league ball? Should they get their 3 million or so each year thereafter?

Happens all of the time. $25/day isn't even much either. It's why people make fun of construction workers that get per diem for a project, get a new boat, truck, 4-wheeler, etc. Project ends and they all get repossessed.
