Is blacklisting even realistic? It's not like they're going to start cold calling other companies and saying 'don't hire lsufanintexas.'
recruiters talk.
I did this in 2008, and I do not regret renegging on the job offer. My company countered with 100% pay raise, how could I turn that down?
But recruiter calls died for a few years, and are still slower despite the job market being pretty good.

Your wife and kids want you to be home, even if it means lowering their standard of living.
That alone makes you a rich man.

You need to take this job if you don't have any other options. Then you keep applying until you have another offer with better work/life balance.

As a hiring manager I would rather someone not start. It takes time and effort to train someone and if they end up leaving in 6 months or a year it definitely isn't beneficial from the company's perspective.
Provide an honest response to the hiring manager. Within the last 3 months I had someone back out of an offer b/c he said his fiancé didn't want him to take the job after he already accepted. I'm glad he didn't start and we would never consider him for another position.....

Decided to not renege. Wasn't worth the burnt bridges. Am working it out with family.

I can see your side, but in my opinion "F" burnt bridges if it means making my family unhappy. Family comes first. Period. I know that sometimes your family may not understand your job as they aren't there everyday, etc. but if my wife and children told me what they told you, I wouldn't be traveling.
I hope that you do indeed work it out, but be extra sensitive to your family and their needs right now and in the future. Most wives and children just want you to be there above everything else.
I wish you nothing but the best.

I negotiated the company flying my family out twice a month with me to wherever I may be.

Nicely done. Hope that works for your family. That's a tough situation no matter how much you're being paid. God speed.

That sounds legit. I like your negotiating style

When you are an old man on your death bed with your kids surrounding you, they won't be reminiscing about the money you had or spent on them, but the time you spent with them.
Easy choice.

Can't you say "I spoke with my wife and we agree I should travel less. I would love to take the job but I need no more than 25% travel (or whatever)
If they accept, you dont have to reneg. If they dont meet your condition, you move on

I'm glad. Now I won't have to call you a renegger.

Damn. Not bad. Didn't realize you worked weekends...now I can see why your family was upset.

Nice - hopefully your family was supportive and will get to see places that they may not have had the opportunity had you not taken the job.
