That's why you've got to go major oil if you can swing it. I had worked oilfield internships since 18 years old so I knew the talk and exactly what I wanted to do.
Plant employees for Dow, Monsanto, etc. start at ~$72K I think...

3.4 is minimum for interview with Shell.
Fresh out of school starts 65-70 with set raises and bonus for 3 years. At the end of the 3 years it's 85-90 then open season from there.

I decided to major in Pete for the high starting salary stated all over the Internet at 83k. Is this amount just not average anymore?
Before anyone slams me for majoring in something purely for financial gain... Isn't that what college is for in the first place, to gain financially upon graduating?
With that stated, are the people answering just giving educated guesses or are a lot of you actually in the industry?

I'll just throw this out there since this thread is all about salaries. What you make in your first 10 years in the oil industry is peanuts compared to what you could make in years 10-30. Its much more important to set your self up for the career you want. I've turned down several jobs for more money because they were gonna get me more money but hardly any of the experience I wanted.
This is true for lots of fields, not just the O&G industry.

Hey guys.
I'm in CIVE with a current 3.4 GPA. Gonna have 2 summers of internships under my belt when I graduate. What $ am I looking at?
TIA

Civil really just depends on the type of civil you want to do...
Minimum starting around 50, but the right job may start you around 65

About the same as the guy a couple posts up that asked almost the exact same question.
ETA: I'll assume you're not civil, so please take my post in jest.

I actually work in the industry and am familiar with the pay grades.
I can't speak for all major oil companies, but there's at least a couple that are paying PE, Chem E, and ME's close to if not at $100k right out of school with only a bachelor of science degree.
And yearly salary increases included.

I went into the wrong field...granted PETE is a very tough curriculum but I couldnt imagine working much harder in school than I did and make nowhere near that

83k average is not unheard of at all. I graduated in PETE 2 years ago and have been working for a service company (trying to switch over though).
80k is on the low side of what operators offer, and one graduate claimed to make "shitty" pay when he started at 80 with a medium operator.
The problem is, there are loooots of people going into PETE right now..may affect the demand a little bit, but pETE is still a rare major.
You can also make good $$ working for a service company. I do field work and cleared 6 figures easily last year (but field service work blows)

I'm 1 year in the industry making a little over 100k as a PE for a major.

So, what's your typical work schedule? What is a typical day at work for you? Do you enjoy your job?
