Paying taxes on a private sale truck

Purchasing a new truck for 38,000 from a private seller. State sales tax is 4.45% and local is 4%. 8.45% of $38,000 is $3200 Any loopholes to get around this?

don't you just pay ad valorem tax at the DMV when you register it? no way around it unless you don't wont it registered (at least in GA)

First, AS I RECALL, it doesn't really matter what you pay for a used vehicle. The sales tax on a used car will be based on the blue book value. This is so people can't just give cash to a seller "on the slide" while purchasing a vehicle.
Second, the only loophole I know of to get around sales tax is on the trade-in. Unfortunately, this loophole does not apply to private sales. So, if you buy a new car from a dealer for $40k and you trade-in your car for $10k, you'll only pay sales tax on $30k. That rule is not applicable in every state so you'll have to check if it's applicable in your state. Louisiana is one of those states. But, like I said, I'm pretty sure it doesn't apply to private sales (how could it?).

You and seller take the bill of sale to a “title place”, they fill out the info for your registration and collect the appropriate sales tax based on the price in the bill of sale.
Be reasonable.
Be reasonable.

You pay taxes based on the sales price, but if they think you're trying to game the system they will make you pay taxes on the Blue Book value.

Always remember that taxes, and particularly local and state taxes, are nothing more than your fellow citizens thinking they are owed a portion of your money.

If you pay cash, all you gotta do is have the seller put something low like $200 on the bill of sale and you pay a low tax. The blue book did not matter at all. I know of this being done many times.

That’s how it is in CT. They tax you on the greater of the sale price or blue book.

I always try and do an in and out to save on taxes. I sold my Audi S7 last year to give me the vin when I bought my BMW X5M. I could have sold it for more on the open market but I don’t have to deal with selling the car.
I’m doing the same thing selling my 2017 F250 for 57k to my brother who is willing to do an in and out. Instead of selling it for a higher price I’m selling it to my brother for what the dealership offered me. 81k minus 4k off sticker, minus 57k leaves me paying 20k worth of taxes.
