Let's say I wanted to purchase a $1K of silver to physically have on hand. What is the preferred medium? One big 2.2kg block or a whole bunch of ounce pieces? If a bunch of smaller pieces is it the coin pieces or dog tag looking bars? I guess the question is what do I want it for. Well, I don't know, besides knowing I have something of value in case paper currency goes to nothing. Maybe it will be the joke on the kids and they can figure out what to do with it one day.

If not silver what about another metal?

I just feel like I want to know more and learn more about holding physical precious metals.

Do you think canned pinto beans OR silver bars will have more value if paper currency goes to nothing?

Tools, guns, food, generators, spare parts, gasoline, water purification equipment, etc..

You think folks gonna trade that for shiny stuff when the govt collapses?

It depends on your goals.

A store of value in case of a monetary collapse or a barter tool post collapse.

Probably a bunch of smalls will be better unless you are trying to hedge a large amount of wealth, but there are other assets you can hedge with.

Precious metals have been a monetary standard for a long time, probably will never change unless we get a world wide meteor shower of precious metals and everybody now has them.

I think this kind of confirms what I was thinking.

Ok, take collapse out, NOT the primary reason. I guess it is more of something that you can hold that you know has value. Like rifle and pistol primers. Sure, they are everywhere now, but during COVID it was hard to find and priced high. Thanks for your reply

Not silver. The price per oz. is way too, low, making storage impractical. Better to spread your wealth among a variety of hard assets, including real estate, gold and things that have practical value.

I have a pile of steel on my property and a healthy supply of metal working tools that I can build whatever I need if the time comes. That's the only metal I hold.

Why does everyone assume it's a "doomsday" scenario?

Personally, I think that metals backed currency will once again be a thing. The paper money shell game is going to blow up. It's inevitable.

To answer your question, I'd buy 1 oz bars or rounds instead of the big bars. I'd also grab a little gold where you can.

A little adds up over time.

And just as several other posters have indicated, brass and lead also can come in handy if you're a SHTF kind of guy.

Gold is able to be traded for any currency. So if the dollar collapses (or the govt). You still have value.

What do you call a scenario where paper money isn’t worth anything?

You can peel the label off canned goods and pretend they’re silver bars.

If you think you are holding it to build wealth, then I would buy large bars to keep the price over spot lower.

If you think you are preparing for societal collapse and will need to barter then I would buy 1 oz pieces.
