Louisiana Sales Tax New Car Purchase

I'm trying to understand sales tax a little better on a new vehicle purchase in Louisiana. I know state tax rate is 4% but do you also pay the parish or city tax? I think my total tax rate is almost 10%. This seems really steep compared to other states on vehicle purchases.

Yes
Did you trade in a vehicle? You pay sales tax on the sales price after the trade in amount is deducted. If you didn't have a trade in, you'll pay on the full amount.

No trade, just buying a new one. Thanks!

Yep, local & state taxes, so roughly 10% of sales price (depends on zip code). Love louisiana

They will calculate it based on the total sales tax rate at your home address. So it won’t help to buy in a town with a lower rate.
And yes it is really steep compared to many other states. LA has lower property and income taxes, so they make it up with ridiculous sales tax.

I never understood why is the registration fee based on the cars selling price. Years later when you renew the fee is still based on the original sale price. Just a money grab

I always hear this, but:
$7500/yr in property insurance
$11,000/yr in prop tax (3400 sq ft, nothing crazy)
~4-6% in income tax
~10% sales tax
Stupid high auto insurance
Louisiana is expensive to live, without much to show for it.

It is steep in Louisiana... Bought a new Tacoma in LA 6 years ago and paid 10%. Bought a new CX5 in TX a month ago and paid 6.25%.

Any every subsequent sale of the same vehicle is taxed…
Think about over the lifecycle of that vehicle how much tax revenue it generates if it’s sold 3 or 4 times…

Dude, where do you live?!
I live in the same state and pay $45.00 (yes 45) a year in property tax for a 2500 sq ft house on 15 acres and $2200 HO insurance.
Get to the country.
