I was in this situation about 10 years ago. I just explained to company A, like you did in your post, then went to work for company B. Company A wasn't too happy and I felt bad about it, but it was ultimately the right choice.

Take the better offer.
If you hadn’t been there that long Co A hasn’t invested much in you and just let them know it’s a big step up. They’ll be pissed but it’s understandable.
In the past I held off on an offer waiting for a better one…that eventually came…but pissed off the first company for holding out.

Company A wouldnt care if you have a stroke and died right now
Do what is right for you and your family. You are going to burn a bridge and will most likely never be hired again by this company or whomever the hiring manager is if you happen to come across them so keep that in mind. But if you are ok with that, do what is best for your family and dont think of anything else cause thats exactly what Company A would do

Happens all the time. Go with Company B if that’s what you want. Nobody should hold it against you.

Who was doing the job for the 6 weeks they were “interviewing”people?
Their new hire may have left quickly, for a reason, just as you are contemplating!

I understand why Company B was taking their time and doing their due diligence. This role is a mid-senior level position. I don’t fault them at all for taking 6 weeks to do a thorough search. I just wasn’t in a position to wait around on the off chance they went in a different direction.

The only people that will fault you are those at Company A. And only bc they will have to settle for worse. Like you said, that’s basically no one since you have a huge pool of potential employers
