Exactly what I hoped to be doing. My career has worked out better thus far than I could have envisioned as an undergraduate.

Yes, and Masters.

No way.
4 years in a virology lab was long enough to realize I was going to be broke forever if I stayed on that path.

I am. In technology. That being said, as I'm hitting my mid 30s I'm starting to want to do something else.

This is exactly the career path I'm going! What device company did you represent? Medtronic? Stryker? S&N?
I started my own LLC and contracted with spinal implant companies.

Surprised you left medical sales to be a financial advisor though...
Much higher pay ceiling as an FA. Building the book takes a few years, but once you get enough AUM, the paychecks are much larger.

Nope.
And let me reiterate a point that is made time and time again.
Kids - your networking abilities will get you much further in life than making all A report cards.
Join social clubs, sports teams and put yourself in situations where you can learn from people who are more successful than you.
The saying "show me your friends and I'll show you your future" is 100% on point.

Computer science degree and work in software. Took 7 years to graduate as I was an English major who got an internship with an IT company at 20 and changed my major.

Civil engineering - manage O&M for large scale civil works projects for my organization, so right up my alley. Definitely my dream job.

I kind of agree. My opportunities have been available specifically because of the grades I made in school. They were a check the box to even be considered. In general, yes you can hustle your way to success through networking. However, some fields are not open that way.

I work directly in the field I graduated in, but my graduate degree is in the same field as undergrad.
