Well, the university "sold" it to the credit agency for pennies on the dollar. So they will settle with you for less. Give a son story and make an offer. Get it in writing. Do a loan to pay it off and rebuild your credit in the process.
Fine a credit union and you'll get less than 10% interest.
Profit

So I know it’s been over a year so I thought I would provide an update.
So after reading through this thread I pulled my credit report. Somehow this debt is not tied to my SSN and to this day (4 years later) does not appear on my credit report.
So I began to save $$$ to make an offer to the collection agency. I then contacted said agency who informed me the debt is no longer with them. However when I talked to the university they were adamant the debt was still with the agency.
I was unable to make any headway. I moved from Kentucky in early of last year. When filing for my taxes this year I received my Federal and South Carolina state refund promptly. I did not receive my Kentucky one and inquired why not. Sure enough, a few days later I received a letter from the Kentucky Department of Revenue that my debt had been referred to them now and my refund was used against the balance of the debt.
It should be known the first correspondence I received from the KYDOR was this letter informing me my refund had been used to offset the balance. Upon further research I see that the Department of Revenue is authorized to collect on behalf of state agencies however a recent court ruling in February ordered the state to stop the practice. I’m not sure if they appealed as I haven’t been able to find any information more recent than February.
Long story short - I no longer live in KY and this debt doesn’t appear on my credit report. In fact, I’ve bought a home since last year when I originally posted this. However, I really want this settled but the DOR website says the state WILL NOT settle for less than what is owed, so I really have no idea where to go from here.

Is the DOR debt what you originally owed or with a ton of interest?
Also, are you sure the state DOR can't go after you in other states? I have no idea, but I'd be very surprised if you can simply move out of state to avoid a large debt.

I didn’t move to avoid the debt. I just found out the DOR has the debt. I was just wondering because only my Kentucky refund was used against me.
And no it’s with a shite ton of fees interests etc
And I’m not sure because apparently a judge ruled the DOR can’t collect for a state university.

Only in America. This thread is amazing, and what's most amazing about it is that your case probably isn't all that different than thousands of others.

Yep. It looks like you've got yourself into a situation where you will absolutely have to pay the full amount, but where the consequences of not paying in a timely manner are relatively small (so long as you don't want to go back and live in the state of Kentucky). Additionally, it doesn't seem to be a huge amount of money, relative to other people who have taken out student loans.
I'm rooting for you, brother, but as another poster already said, in the grand scheme of things, you don't seem to be in that much of a hole. Overall, things seem to be going well for you.

Absolutely. It’s not on my credit report and it’s not a huge hassle to pay off. In fact, I’ve considered doing it on a CC with rewards and points and it’s not a huge hole like some people get. I mean, I have friends who have 100,000+ in student loans, so yes in the grand scheme of things it’s not that bad.

Apparently you haven’t considered anything except to come here and act like you are sincerely working to pay a debt you owe. It’s a wonder you actually were smart enough to earn a college degree.
How about this. Instead of trying to convince everyone here you just can’t quite figure it out be a fricking honorable person and pay the damn money you owe. You have a college degree and only had to pay for ONE semester yet “ whoa is me how can I get out of it?”
I hope they make you pay full balance including all interest and penalties.

Have never once asked how I can get out of it. But thank you for the input.

But you started this thread 14 months ago seeking advice on a then 3 year old debt you obviously were hoping to skate on and now the debt is that much older and you still are trying to weasel out of it.

If I had no intentions of settling it I wouldn’t have posted here to begin with.
Posted on 5/6/18 at 2:07 pm to Bluegrass_Cat
So then why not pay back the debt that you owe?

Yes, but by not getting right on it when you first posted, sounds like you may have missed an opportunity to settle for less... or at least not get gouged on fees and what not.
Are they still holding your diploma hostage?

Thanks for letting us know you’re still a deadbeat and drain on society.
There’s always next January to “turn over a new leaf” and make a news years resolution you won’t keep.

I never said you did, I said I have a hard time believe a state DOR debt can simply be avoided by someone moving. I would guess that state can go after you in some form or another.

10k Dave Ramsey would say deliver pizza. Get a second job. Join a credit union

Not necessarily true. If they do, it's either going to cost the OP money to defend, or he is going to just not answer the suit. Ultimately, it will end up as a garnishment which will be painful for a long period of time.

It didn't sound to me like OP was trying to avoid paying it.
And OP is from Kentucky so now see why you hate him.![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconcheers.gif)

As unfair as it sounds, I guess you have to finally pay for the services that were rendered to you. The world is a cruel place.

some self righteous mofos in this thread
what's with the hate for the guy who seems to be trying to settle up his debt? i don't blame him for trying to settle without full interest and penalty (if any). this is not uncommon and not being a deadbeat. now his situation seems to be a complete mess and he could probably use the advice, not judgment from the e badasses in here.

He got good advice when this was posted over a year ago - to settle with the collection company. His update from a month ago said that by the time he got around to contacting the company, they no longer held the debt and the state wants him to pay in full. Am I missing something?
