Many debt collection companies operate without becoming owners of the debt via a contract with the company who extended credit.

And I believe this is especially true for higher ed tuition.

that about covers it. so that means let's be a dick to the guy on the internet? guess my compass points the wrong direction.

My compass tells me that if I was rendered $10k+ in services and made a conscious decision to not pay, my first response when asked to pay wouldn't be to post on the internet and say "I don't know what to do."

So if we disagree there, I don't know what to tell you.

so the guy admits his mistake, says he is trying to figure out best way to pay it off, and you decide the best response is to essentially call the guy worthless? (not just you, btw. there were several others. only responding to you since you responded to me). you sound like a great guy to hang with. it's the money board dude. get off your high horse.

It’s not self righteous to expect educated people to behave with honor and a sense of fair play. He clearly received credit for the coursework and did not pay. He ignored the debt, has managed to get by without paying for quite a string of years....but that’s not an honorable course of action. He could probably be paying them $200 a month, without any sort of payment plan—just send the dang check to the university’s bursar’s office, and it will be applied to his old balance. But all he’s done is eletronically wring his hands, never once making any sort of sacrifice to pay down any of the debt.

Now, if he had dropped all of his classes that semester and was trying to get them to forgive a tuition charge for a semester when he didn’t earn any credit, I might have some sympathy.

$10-$15K is like buying a used car. Budget, make that monthly payment, and hold your head up as an honorable person who does not skip out on his debits. Just because it’s a large institution doesn’t mean you’re not a deadbeat. Pay your dang debts.

I feel like if he was able to save up the money to buy a house and move states, he could of paid his debts.

He rolled the dice that he wouldn’t have to pay up and the dice came up craps. Now you pay debt+penalties+interest.

We paid and satisfied a heck of a lot more than 10k in student loans. No doubt we would have preferred to do otherwise. One of the colleges was less than honorable but that is another story.

To the OP: PAY YOUR DARN DEBT

To the OP's question: LESS THAN YOU DESERVE
