My family owns a business and are looking for a sales support role (admin assistant) for our sales reps. We found a candidate that everyone thought was a homerun. She had 9 years of experience at a large telecom company as an admin assistant for their executives. That location was relocated to TX and her job was eliminated unless she wanted to move. She's in her 50s. We offered her the job and then said we were going to do a background check. She admitted that her background report wouldn't come back clean and wanted us to know before we saw it on the report. It wasn't murder but it's also not disturbing the peace.

I thanked her for telling us upfront and would take it to the family to see what we should do.

The charge is prostitution. She said that about 7 years ago she needed the money and this was the only thing she could think of to generate quick money.

I'm torn because she would be a great hire but this little blemish on her report scares me. Any advice from some experienced MT's?

I could only imagine the responses I would get on the OT which is why i'm coming here first!

Many, many girls have done this in their past, but just haven't gotten caught. Even if not done it professionally, they've dated rich/older men for obvious reasons.

She's not a criminal IMO.

Let he that has no sin cast the first stone.

Hire her.

Don't let someone's past trangressions keep you from following your instinct.

It's the people who lie and steal to hide their past that you'll have the most trouble with - the ones who own up to their prior mistakes are generally very solid.

I'd view this as a positive tbh.

How detailed of a report can you get on the charge? I'd just be worried there might be a drug problem involved. I don't see "escort" type prostitution as any different than a girl who did a porn film, but if she was working the streets for drug money that would be different. I'd assume she'd have other charges then as well.

Wouldn't she have been working her last role for 2 years when the charge came? Why was she so desperate for money at that time?

I'd really look in to whether the company moving thing adds up. A lot of people give that type of BS reason for leaving a job they were let go from. If that adds up and everything else feels good in your gut instincts, then I think it would be fine to hire her.

Hire her. Give her a chance.

I think you need to get the report and go from there. If it's a single charge 7 years ago, I would hire her - but I might not put her in a position where a lot of cash is involved or she would have bank authority.

People make mistakes. The only way for people to truly move past their past is to get the chance to do so.

She's been nothing but honest with you to this point. I'd hire her and I am a business owner.

Wow, I'm surprised that everyone that replies said to hire her. I honestly thoughthink that I would get a few don't do it responses. The report will come back tomorrow at which point we will evaluate the charges and see if there is anything else. In my gut I feel like she is being completely truthful and this was something that she had to do in order to get quick money.

Something that one of you said really hit home. I'm not a bible beater but for some reason "thy with no sin shall cast the first stone" struck a chord with me.

Yes they do but this one is normally accompanied by a litany of other mistakes.

I would be very skeptical of the rest of the story and check it out VERY well prior to hiring her.

With the combination of the type of "crime", and her honesty about it, I would still consider hiring her.

I think the motivation to commit the crime is more telling than the crime itself. As long as she's not in a role that gives her access to cash and/or bank accounts, I'd give her the chance if she was otherwise qualified.

Yup which is why I said I would want to see the background check and reports first.

We've never asked someone for a drug test so we can't decide to start it with her.

We received the background check back and it actually came back 100% clean. We are using the basic background service so i'm wondering the validity of our background service company now.

Takes some balls to come clean like she did so integrity and character probably isn't an issue.

On her application, did she list any of her transgressions or she just waited until she knew she'd be found out before telling you?

I think most background checks only go back so far, or maybe they don't cover misdemeanors. Call and ask.

It's possible she wasn't convicted so it wouldn't show up. She may have thought a simple arrest would show up so came clean, but in actuality she got first time offender status or something and was never actually convicted.

ETA: But I've also heard some of those background checks are riddled with mistakes, so who knows.
