Well, yeah, buddy, that means I can "handle" a $2k note. I can "handle" being in jail.

Oh, so he can do it, but he'd be crazy? Then you agree with me.

exactly. "handling" it doesn't mean it is a smart choice. These threads always make me laugh. i could have "handled" buying a maserati 10 years ago. Would that have been smart with the other notes i had? Along with other factors out of my control? I could buy one cash right now? Would that still be smart and use up plenty of my funds for other investments? hell no! When i have more cash flow then i may consider buying a used one. 09's run for 45k. I still wouldn't do it because we have no dealer here. Maybe if I move to H-town.

They're 580hp vs 650 for the new one. They look 97% the same. And about $30k cheaper. I dont think it's an outrageous comparison.

Both big ole fat Camaros to me. You think the new one will fare drastically better on resale in 4 years?

Not at all, and I don't think I made that claim.

Go rent one for a weekend and get it out of your system. You'll come out much cheaper when the newness wears off and you don't have a $600 monthly car note.

Anything that has tires and you put gas in is not a good investment. But you only live once. Look for a good deal on a certified used one.

Look for a 2015 SS 1LE. You can find those for $25-30k. If you're set on the newer Camaro, you can still pick up a 1LE for a decent price, but the 5th Gen should be plenty for what you want.
If you're just looking for something fun to drive, I'd look at a C6 Z06 as well.

I'm considering buying a new car. I'm looking at the 2018 ZL1 1LE.
When I was 16, I bought an Accord that I drove until 2007 when I bought a 2002 Tacoma. I still have both and both run fine, but lately, I've been wanting something fun for the weekends
You trading one of them? I just looked up the price of the car you are talking about. It looks like a total monster that would be an absolute blast to drive, but it's also pushing $70K. I've certainly seen people with less income spend almost that much for F250s every few years.
I'd personally go for a lower end model Camaro, which have definitely expanded in scope to be more than just a muscle car. They are legit sports cars now even without the race track packagaes.
I wouldn't recommend spending that much but we all have our hobbies. I spend a lot on travel and entertainment, some like golf or hunting, others like cars. If you anticipate keeping it as a weekend vehicle for a decade while still maintaining your current level of savings and lifestyle......knock yourself out.

What is your net worth? Are you trying to build net worth? How secure is that income? Add up all the costs involved and then estimate how many hours your arse will be in the seat and see how much the monstrosity will cost you per hour. If you decide to transfer your wealth to Detroit, the worker there will thank you. The only way I would consider it is if financial independence is already assured and if I was a serious gear head with a near jay leno quality garage to go with it.

Ended up with a 2015 1LE for $31k. Plenty of car for me.
Thanks for the replies everyone.

Yep. Ended up trading the Accord in for $2k also.

I can't beat you up about that (little high, but not crazy) - enjoy it.

Sorry, but your car price vs. salary ideas are quite a bit off. In your opinion, unless you are a top 10% earner in the whole country, you basically shouldn't drive a truck or SUV unless it's used and has 60k miles on it. Need to be in the top ~5% to buy a vehicle over 40k (which is probably half of all vehicle with a leather interior when looking at msrp).
I can tell you that I can comfortably afford 80k worth of vehicles with a dual income between 150 and 200k, sending a kid to daycare, maxing out retirement, and saving ~1k money each month. Using the ~28% rule I've seen you state means I overpaid by 30k+. But somehow, we are doing just fine.

Do you have the cash to pay for this car? If you can't pay cash for it, you can't afford it.
