BEGIN AS YOU MEAN TO GO ON.

Imprint this on your brain. If you want to fuel expectations of big gifts for every gift giving occasion, then by all means buy an engagement ring.

If this is your choice, then check out the local pawn shops. My friend has been buying some very good diamonds in pawn shops lately. She takes the diamonds out of setting and has a local jewelery designer re design. Of course, she has her own loupe also.

I bought my now-wife a very nice, but reasonably priced setting, that holds the stone from my grandmother's ring.

We haven't shared gifts for any occasion (wedding, birthdays, Christmas, anniversary's) since.

That reminds me. There was one noticeable inclusion on the diamond that I picked out, but the clarity on the rest of the diamond was outstanding.

Since the inclusion was out on the edge, they were able to hide it right beneath one of the prongs on the setting. So the clarity that anyone could see was better than what I paid for.

Also, I think from a grading standpoint only imperfections visible at 10x magnification count against the clarity grade- but it's been a while.

Those people make out like bandits. I would envy them if I was getting married.

They may say that. They'll still cut you a better deal if you agree to pay cash.

Small family owned jewelry store in my hometown... Fraternity Brother parents own it... Paid 8k in four installments no interest.

It was more like lay-a-way than anything else

There are lots of worse things people blow money on. A huge wedding is one of them.

This. (Both of them). Mama BFIV can't wear her diamond because she has to wear rubber surgical gloves most of the time dealing with her patients. That diamond is stuck away somewhere in my gun safe. I can't wear a wedding band because I must be allergic to it since my skin starts to slough off around the ring area after about a week. And we got married at the Justice Of The Peace office. I don't reckon that means we're any less married.

damn, I spent about 2.5K and that stretched me thin. And I financed it. I am OT poor though.

I have already paid it off though. I know the wise thing to do is NOT finance, but I figured it was a relatively small amount. She is happy with the ring, that is all thats important (at least she says she is )

Engagement ring question

did you guys buy it cash/credit, or did you go the finance route?

Cash.

Financing a ring is not a good way to start out a marriage. Financial stress is the # 1 cause for divorce.

Lucy's ring cost 100 bucks. My ring cost 50. We don't give a shite about rings. We celebrated our 18th anniversary a week ago. It went like this:
Me: "Lucy, we've been married 18 years now."
Her: "MmmmKay, let the dogs out so they'll stop barking."

Sorry but a real woman wouldn't care how much you spend and woudln't expect you to spend more than is "reasonable" and NOT 3 to 6 months salary.

My ring was a pendant that was mounted onto a band ... I think it cost less than $100 because HIS band cost more than mine. The pendant was his mothers.

Later I got my mom's diamond that she got from my dad. We reset that and that is now what I wear.

Husband has only bought diamond earrings and that was for my 30th birthday.

Cash.

I was habitually single for a few years after getting out of college. I was lucky enough to have a nice amount of savings in the bank.

Paid $5,300 for the ring and honestly feel like I got a steal. Friend of mine used to work for a local fine jeweler so I showed him a few pictures of what she thinked she would like. Bought him lunch one day before we went looking and let him to all the negotiating. We walked in the first store and found what we wanted within an hour.

Easiest big purchase I think I will ever make.
