Is there such a thing? For the first time in my adult life, I'm getting very, very nervous about my employment opportunities. I'm currently in a Oil & Gas related job, and if things get any worse, I'm fricked. Lafayette's economy unfortunatly is joined at the hip with the O & G industry, and as it goes, so does Lafayette. It has a huge ripple effect over here. I don't know of any business that won't be affected except maybe the medical business. Any ideas?

Not so, while there will always be the need for medical, the dollars may not be there, as people loose jobs, they loose insurance, if they keep their jobs copays and deductibles become harder to make so people stay away from doctors until it too late

Everything is affected, it's just some things like the medical field aren't affected to the extent of others.

But something was very, very different in the fourth quarter of 2008. Sales of alcohol for off-premises consumption were down by 9.3 percent from the previous quarter, according to the Commerce Department. This is absolutely unprecedented: the largest previous drop had been just 3.7 percent, between the third and fourth quarters of 1991.
Beer accounts for almost all of the decrease, with revenues off by almost 14 percent. Wine and spirits were much more stable, with sales volumes declining by 1.6 percent and 0.9 percent respectively.

My father in law is a lawyer in south Florida who does alot of bankruptcy work. Business is getting better for him now, following a slump after they changed the bankruptcy laws a few years back. He's also doing a lot of commercial foreclosure work (mainly land, not properties)

I talked with a lady who owns two upscale liquor (wine and wine tastings, small brewery beers etc) stores if her business has held up. She said if anything its improved. People will drink at home instead of going out, but they will still drink...

People like to say booze is recession proof, but I don't buy it. In the last few years a lot of the increase in alcohol sales hasn't been in volume, it's been in price as Whole Foods shoppers buy their $30 bottles of wine and microbrews. It's real easy to replace those expensive drinks with E&J Gallo and Bud Light while still getting your buzz on.
