I agree. I actually pulled my freedom out when I didn't have my SPG to put regular spend on several times this year. With the 10% YE bonus, I still value 1.1 UR points over 2x cash back. I play this game to travel, not make money. I probably travel 3-4x as much as I did, and spend only marginally more than I did before when all is said and done.
The only "problem" I have with your strategy is that most of your eggs are in the star alliance basket. If you periodically churn the Citi AA and TY products, you'd be fine on that front I suppose.
I meant to expound on my reponse more than I did.
So, along with the SPG merger coming up, I was thinking ahead to my hotel points accrual. I got IHG cards for my wife and I for the free night benefit.
However, if I drop SPG here, I more than likely have to go to Hyatt. Hyatt seems more expensive until you hit the aspirational properties. I see it as being pretty convenient being able to accrue everything in UR, possibly even adding the Hyatt card as well to give me 4 free nights a year between IHG and Hyatt.
I guess I'm just looking at any experience with SPG vs. Hyatt for us points hogs non-business travelers.
Not excited about losing SPG transfer partners but only time I tried it was a bust and it might be going away anyways.
I also have to consider ramping up Citi Thank You accrual or getting an EveryDay Preferred. Both of those programs give you access to Singapore just like UR, but ED Preferred will give me a higher earn rate on 1x purchases. Not to mention I should be able to earn 30k points a year at grocery stores alone.
Decisions decisions. I think I need to bust out a calculator then weigh it with ease of use.

Any other ways to pick up Avios?
Amex MR points can transfer out for Avios although they reduced the rate last year. However, sometimes there is a bonus on the transfer. I got 1:1.4 last January and turned 200k MR points into 280K Avios.

Last year I got a massive bonus on a transfer from MR to Avios. Just keep your eyes open on the blogs.

Just approved for Amex Gold Delta SkyMiles. 50k bonus miles offer after $1k spend in first 3 months and $50 statement credit after Delta purchase. $95 annual fee waived first year. Taking the family to Disney World in Feb so plan on buying our 3 airline tickets on the card to get the statement credit and saving a little money on the bag fees. Anyone have any other advice?

Update: So I put the Disney vacation on my card Dec 21 (was planning on paying cash but needed to spend 1k anyways to get the 50k bonus miles). Went to book my flights yesterday and was surprised to see the 50k miles already credited to my account because it said it'd take 6-8 weeks. Three flights to Orlando costs 60k miles so I bought 10k more miles for $350 and took care of my family's flights plus get the $50 statement credit for Delta purchase. Saved about $1k on the flights. First time doing anything like this so I'm pretty stoked about taking advantage of these credit card offers that you pros take advantage off all the time.

Not to be a dick but you just wasted a pile of miles unless you are flying to Disney from Hong Kong.

I'm new at this. Please explain.
Anyone have any incite on this? He never responded.

I'm not sure what your question is?
Did you waste miles? That's subjective. Did you accomplish your goals? If you did, then there you have it. Delta miles are hit/miss.
I would not have bought 10k miles for $350. shite. How much was cash value of flight?

When I would check periodically over the last month, flights from Shreveport to Orlando were $445 each round trip. For my family of 3 the total cost would have been $1335. The way I saw it was I got two free flights (each round trip ticket was 20k miles) and paid $350 (needed 10k more miles) for the 3rd ticket. Figured I really saved $1k overall. Like I said, I'm new at the whole rewards/points thing so I was looking for other opinions on what I should have or shouldn't have done.

If you are happy with the results don't worry about what someone else said.

I'm a big Hyatt fan. I've earned/spent over 300k Hyatt points in 2 years. I think they are good cards to add to your portfolio and I get my best value out of going to cities with a big event where all properties are through the roof and Hyatt doesn't black out for the most part. Just have to book early.

I think I'm going this route as well.

Ya, I really like the whole standard room availability thing like Starwood has.
Figure my two IHG nights can be used for the random weddings or whatever where I should be able to get a room, Hyatt if that may be a problem/something nicer.
As for Citi and ED. I'm thinking I'm leaning towards Amex. As of now, the overlap of the category bonuses between the Premier(maybe I'll change mind with Prestige) and Chase cards when it comes to gas and dining doesn't flip the value proposition much. For example, Premier gets 1.3 cents on American x cat bonuses. While, alternatively, if I'm going to buy flights with UR it would be on Southwest at 1.4 and the route network is a lot better out of MSY.

I agree.
I'm hoping for something interesting to come along the CC world. I guess the Citi cards were a nice addition. Barclay needs another product.

They sure do.
I may have to set up my legit LLC and get access to more cards. Serve and Buxx hits may be enough to get me going on that

BTW, anyone get their Citgold bonus yet?
I'm about to chat back with them and give them my AA account info to speed this up.

Current point status is pretty crappy. After using 500,000 points for the Bora Bora trip (coming up in April).
Congrats! My fiance and I are looking into Bora Bora for our honeymoon. I know I wont be able to do this all on points alone - we will be thrilled if we can just get the flights taken care of.
Care to share what you booked for flights/resort and how many points it "cost" you?

I'm a big Hyatt fan.
I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if someone told me that 90%+ of my UR redemptions have been Hyatt transfers.
Posted on 1/11/16 at 6:34 pm to Joshjrn
I was just looking at using rewards for a vacation in May... for some of the Hawaiian resorts it is around 140+k Hilton points per night, the Hyatt Resorts are only 25k/night. Its almost laughable for devalued Hilton rewards are now.
Posted on 1/11/16 at 6:55 pm to lilsnappa
Well Hilton rewards are a shitload easier to earn as well.
It is a lot easier to get good value on Hyatt redemptions though.

Just woke up and I'm now wide awake. Might as well get some constructive advice from this board. Looking for recommendations on new CC rewards cards.
Currently have:
Chase Freedom
Chase Sapphire (dropped down from preferred to regular 8 mo back)
Chase Amazon
All three I have taken advantage of on sign up bonuses.
All three I pay off balances every month.
Credit = 780+
Payoff balances in full every month
Primary expenses: groceries and restaurants, with fuel and gas being a distant 3rd.
Questions is, is there any better options currently out there for a consumer like me?
TIA
