It is a publicly available offer. Meaning you can get 50K anytime. Citi TYP are ok. Chase UR are better. And chase cards are harder to get after multiple inquiries (more than 5 in 2 years). Chase Sapphire is running a higher bonus currently. (55k instead of 45k with AU). I'd get that first if you don't already have it.

Imo, best uses of Citi TYP are transferring to Singapore or Flying Blue (KLM/Air France).

That public offer supposedly goes away next Thursday.

I had no idea! Thanks for the info. I was just wondering whether I should include this in my next AoR. It gets in.
Got a referral link?

No problem.

Wish I did, but thanks for asking.

I'm getting for my wife now this month. Hopefully play the juggle game with those TY points between her and I since they have some really weird expiration rules at Citi.

Expiration rules? I didn't think TYP expired?

They don't if you keep the issuing card open (absent another workaround that I'll get to).

For example, say you have a Citi Premier AND a Citi Prestige.

If you cancel the Premier, but keep the Prestige and have the approx 100,000 points. Citi states that points acquired from a card expire after 60 days. This is true EVEN IF you have a Prestige as well. Even though Citi will state you have 100,000 points, the points are technically still in two buckets.

A possible workaround is to not cancel the Premier but downgrade to the Citi Dividend. Reports seem to show this works.

Further, while you can transfer City TY points to another person at will, those points will expire in 90 days from the time of transfer.

The bright spot is, the Citi program is programmed to take these expiring points out first when you redeem them to hopefully avoid their expiration and total loss.

Good info. I only have the Prestige currently which I want to keep. I realize I miss out on 50K every 18 months but losing the 4th night free benefit will cost me way more.

However, from my knowledge, I think you can get the same citi card again (after 18 months of account opening/closing) even if you already have the same card. So in that case, in 1.5 years I would get another, then close the current card and go from there.

Also - is it 90 days after 1st transfer or 90 days after every transfer (which would mean you could stop them from ever expiring)?

From what I read, if I send 20,000 points to you for example. Those points will expire in 90 days.

If transfer another 30,000 to you 20 days later, those will expire in 90 days, but 20 days after the first transfer.

Of course, if you as the recipient transfer them to an airline, you are under their rules at that point.

Ya, I only have Premier but that 4th night free benefit is pretty huge. I don't know how they are going to keep that much longer.

I'll post here instead of starting a new credit card thread. Will try to keep this short and sweet, as I'm a novice when it comes to reward cards.

- would like to start traveling more now that I'm financially able to

- most flights would be out of Monroe which has Delta, United, and American, though I could occasionally fly out of Shreveport or Jackson

- could easily spend several thousand a month on the card to get as many points as possible

- should I look for a travel specific card like Chase Sapphire or just a basic rewards card?

TIA

I'm looking to get a "better" rewards credit card. Seems like the Chase sapphire is the way to go.

I typically spend around 3k a month on food/gas/misc stuff. Is the Chase Sapphire card for me?

Do most just pay the annual fees or is there ways of getting around them? I always use the free ones.

I spent a a few more minutes looking and found the Citi Premier.

So Chase Sapphire vs Citi Premier...

Dale and Ton -

Chase Sapphire Preferred is definitely the best starter card. Mainly because Chase has so many good transfer partners. Earnings is good on CSP and currently they are offering a higher bonus. Now is the time to get it. Not only because of that, but like I had previously mentioned, it gets harder to get Chase UR earnings cards (Sapphire, Freedom, Ink) the more number of cards you sign up for. So CSP is the way to go. I like to pair it with Freedom to give me a little more earning power (5x on revolving categories). CSP waives first year AF, and it is $95 from then on. Apart from great earning potential, it gives you PRIMARY rental car insurance, which imo, is worth the $95 AF. Freedom has no AF Remember - You can only transfer points earned from Freedom to travel partners if you have a Sapphire Preferred (or Ink) as well. If possible - try to use someone's referral as it costs you nothing. Other person gets a nice (5k) bonus.

Dale - If possible I would try to fly out of DFW more often than Monroe. DFW is an AA hub so more flight options. But remember - AA is not a UR transfer partner. You want to look into United flights (Houston is a hub). Or look into earning AA points. Or both. If you are flying out of smaller airports - the award search engine usually is not very efficient (due to the # of connections). Best way to go about that is first finding the over water flight (ex: EWR to LHR) then looking at domestic connection (SHV to EWR). Most award programs let you get free domestic connections on international redemptions as long as awards on all legs are available.

Ton - Between CSP and Citi Prem, my pick would be the CSP hands down. Citi TYP are good, but not as good (and easy to use - think awards on United vs awards on Singapore KrisFlyer/Flying Blue) as UR.

It helps (a lot) if you have an idea of where you want to go. That way you know exactly what points you need. If you don't know yet - Bank points are the way to go (Chase UR, Citi TYP, AmEx MR). Not sure if there is a private messaging system here, but If you ever need help booking an award flight - let me know and I will try to help you.

See, I don't even know that this means. Does it mean I wouldn't be able to use those points on any AA flights?

Dale, I fly out of Monroe and Jackson regularly and it all depends on where you are going but if you are able to go to Jackson on occasion I would say go with AA. American usually seems to be the cheapest out of this area with United sometimes having some good rates out Monroe.

Plus with the AA card when your annual fee is due just call and say you are cancelling it and they will waive the fee and usually throw in a few ways to earn a few extra miles.

Yes and No.

There are two ways of redeeming UR points (and bank points in general):

1) Pay for a flight/hotel/other travel and use your points to cover the cost on the statement @ 1.25c per point (for CSP. For Freedom it is 1c per point regardless if you don't have CSP). This is essentially cash back. Worst in terms of redemption value per point.

2) Transfer UR (or other bank points) to a travel partner. UR transfers to United, BA, SW among others at a 1:1 ratio. This is where you can really make your points go a long way as this will yield a much better rate of redemption than 1.25c per point. For example: You can fly to Australia with a stopover in Fiji for 35K United points each way. 40K w/o the Fiji stopover. This flight costs $1700ish RT or 70K UR (transferred to United)., bringing your redemption rate per point to 2.43c per point. Usually the redemption rate is much better for premium cabins if that's what you want. That said, I just travel in coach but more often.

Thanks, I went with CSP. It took about a minute to fill out the online thing. Approval instantly!

Congrats. Don't forget to add an Authorized User for extra 5K points. And definitely don't miss out on the minimum spending requirements to earn the bonus. 55K UR miles can go a loooong way!

I planned on purchasing a new NFA toys this weekend but I figured this is a great time to get a new credit card and reap its benefit.

A couple more weeks of waiting for the card isn't too bad considering the 6month wait times now lol.

Have you ever flown in premium cabins?

It's night and day. I don't know how anybody playing the points game(to its full potential), that isn't flying 4+ people around, is flying in anything but premium cabins on long haul flights.
