Whoa, I think I might have missed something here. I did my loads at the beginning of the month but it sounds like something went down. Off to FT boards.

SO, I'm thinking about dropping use of SPG altogether due to the merger,

If I don't get a retention offer, I'll cancel mine as well. Should be hitting this statement. I'll be getting the biz card and making one last run on it. The real question is when the rewards program will merge. I've read that it's unlikely to happen until 2017 at the earliest. No clue how that would work.

I agree. I actually pulled my freedom out when I didn't have my SPG to put regular spend on several times this year. With the 10% YE bonus, I still value 1.1 UR points over 2x cash back. I play this game to travel, not make money. I probably travel 3-4x as much as I did, and spend only marginally more than I did before when all is said and done.

The only "problem" I have with your strategy is that most of your eggs are in the star alliance basket. If you periodically churn the Citi AA and TY products, you'd be fine on that front I suppose.

Ya, that's what I don't like as well. I'm not sure if I'm talking about all that much money rewards wise as it is once you factor in minimum spends/I already prepaid Amazon this year etc.

So I read up on the Serve thing. Damn they came down hard. I don't see an email yet. However, I've avoided doing closed loops on that for some time now, and even paid out odd numbers instead of $500 in, $500 out.

Hope that helped me survive.

Yeah and not able to pin point where the line was drawn makes it tough moving forward. It's not like they individually analyzed accounts. Maybe you should email and ask them and report back?

I'm staying mum until I get that email.

Not that big a loss I suppose. I rarely did the Ink to Visa GC thing, though it was nice that I could generate 10,000 points on a whim if I needed to. In fact, that was sort of the impetus of my spend post. I think I did maybe $5,000 X 5 in Serve MS last year.

Which then leaves the $1,500 X 2 online loads or $360 a year. Not a huge loss.

So, was the ride as wild as you were expecting? No jet lag?

I enjoyed it a lot.

Flying Asiana there was awesome. Wasn't lagged at all. Any tiredness was lack of sleep from me being difficult from excitement, etc. My wife has no issues to being unconscious flying, and she was a LOT more pleasant upon arrival than previous trips

I'm a bit messed up right now though. Not sure how much I can attribute to lag or the fact I haven't been sleeping with my stomach keeping me up.

Plus, my definition of lag can be a bit more extreme, because the worst I ever felt was coming back from Greece several years ago when I went to the gym to workout a day or so after, and almost threw up all over the place. I've rarely hit a wall like that in any respect.

Oh and finally got my Emirates first awards booked.

DFW-DXB-KUL - 2.5 day stopover in Dubai.

200k points + $70 for two tickets. Would've only been $21, but I had to call in.

So, apparently Alaska website sees "phantom" award space. I could get a flight to show availability for up to 4 on the flight I wanted. So, I logged in to my wife's account and booked hers. Done. I log in to my account and nada availability showing. I'm like awwe hell.

I called right in and they allow free changes up to 60 days in advance, so the rep booked us on the day before which had availability for two. The agent was telling me that Emirates is pretty screwy to deal with and will constantly show award space, but not actually have it. So, if you ever do book an Emirates award with Alaska, something to keep in mind to call ahead and see if it's actually available.

Nice, did you rack all that up with multiple Alaska signups or transfer some in from Starwood?

Ya, I think I read something about the phantom award space. That trip is going to luxury defined

Did you get RT or just the one way so far?

No email yet but I am sure glad I didn't make the Staples purchases I was considering. That could have been a disaster, though, I never do more than I can float.

I bet some folks are really hung out to dry right now on that front.

I've been rather busy uploading all my travel pics to Amazon and Google.

A380? You didn't sneak in to the first class cabin? Don't they have a bar on Asiana A380?

Yeah. That's not good. Never had it that bad, but I've been pretty useless for a day or two.

I did 2 personal and 2 biz for myself @ 25k each card. I applied on the same day for a personal and biz and then 100 days later I did it again. It cost me about $170 out of pocket for 100k miles in about 4 months.

For my wife, she got 2 personal cards 90 days apart @ 25k each.

Gets a little silly after that to get her to 100k.

I then transferred 30k AMEX MR to SPG to net me 10k SPG points. I then had 70k SPG points to book a "nights and flights" SPG deal which gave me 50k points to transfer to any airline and 5 nights in a Cat 4 SPG property.

Taking Japan Airlines First all the way back from Hanoi to ORD and AA home on a 67.5k AA award.

Not going to lie. Pretty fired up about taking a shower on the plane. Not sure why...

Flights on the trip price out to about $70k for the two. That's silly .

No doubt. I didn't go overboard. Ironic time to give them away free. I'm thinking collusion.

I have $1,500 on the way. Not that worried about it if they do continue closing accounts. I'll give 2 to the wife for grocery shopping and prepay some bills or something and Square pay them out if need be.

Unfortunately not the A380, but 777. Still great though. Makes me wonder what it is like to take another step up from that, though what they offered was plenty good enough for me.

United was a 747, and while it was enough as well, it just wasn't close to Asiana.

Need to look into that. From what it sounds like, you got 5 nights for 20,000 SPG at a Cat 4 hotel. That's a pretty big savings.

Ya I have to stay in the game somehow. Buying Biz seats at $6,000 a piece isn't going to work for very long. There is a lifestyle at which I've grown accustomed.

Anyone have the Citi Prestige? These benefits almost look too good to be true.

I got it in Nov. Used the $250 credit towards my SLC to MSY flight. United (yes, I flew those shitbirds) offered an upgrade to first class for only $200 for me and the wife so bought those tix instead of using miles. Used the Global Entry perk immediately which was nice to have Pre Check. Also sat in a couple Priority Pass lounges which was sweet. I'd say the card is easily worth it for the first year and I am actually considering keeping it. I play golf so 3 free rounds will be used this year as well.

When the next $450 fee comes up, I know it's $200 after the credit. So then I just need to figure out if the higher TY points conversion to AA, the golf, the Priority Pass, etc is worth $200. Oh and I did a dispute over a snowmobile charge and it was immediately resolved in my favor

ETA: Because I did the CitiGold checking account, the fee was "only" $350 this year. I have heard some people keep getting the $100 credit even after they close the CitiGold acct so that would make it that much better if true.

GF and I are heading to Spain in August/September. Hitting Barcelona-Bilbao-Madrid-Granada-Maybe Lisbon-Barcelona. We'll be using Iberia Air to get between the cities.

(1) Both looking at signing up for British Airways Visa Signature to get the 50k Avios and transferring them to Iberia.
(2) We have AMEX points that will transfer to Iberia.
(3) We each have the CSP and Freedom, so we have UR points. Can we transfer them to British and then transfer them from British to Iberia?

Any other ways to pick up Avios? Does Iberia have fuel surcharges when redeeming Avios for flights? Just from some very preliminary research, it looks like we can do Barcelona-Bilbao-Madrid-Granada-Barcelona for ~$350 each. Would it even be worth redeeming Avios for those flights?

Not sure if the promo is still there, but open the CitiGold checking and get the 50k TY or AA miles offer. Your fee will be $100 less or the card too. I funded the acct with my Prestige for all $26k so I got 76k TY points from the card offer and "spend" and then I'm getting 50k AA miles because of the CitiGold deal.

Thanks to Afro for letting me know about the CitiGold thing
